Collaboration Between Borealis, Neste and Mam Brings New Soother to Market Made With Renewably-sourced Feedstock

Collaboration Between Borealis, Neste and Mam Brings New Soother to Market Made With Renewably-sourced Feedstock

  • Mam is accelerating action on circularity together with Borealis by introducing Mam Original Pure soother and packaging made possible by Borealis Bornewables portfolio of circular polyolefins
  • Upstream value chain partner Neste is the supplier of renewable feedstock Neste RE based on waste and residue streams for the manufacture of Bornewables polypropylene
  • Advancing EverMinds ambitions through value chain collaboration in the name of plastics circularity

Borealis, Neste and Mam collaboratively announce an exciting product development made possible by value chain collaboration in the spirit of EverMinds, the platform created to accelerate action on plastics circularity. Mam has been creating innovative and unique baby products such as soothers and baby bottles for more than 45 years, and has recently launched its first climate-neutral soother. The rigid part of the new Mam Original Pure soother is composed of renewably-sourced polypropylene (PP) from the Bornewables portfolio of circular polyolefins, manufactured with Neste RE produced entirely from renewable raw materials.

Furthermore, the packaging of Mam Original Pure soother, which also functions as a steriliser box, is also made using the Bornewables. This development is an excellent example of how eco-efficient design and the use of circular polyolefins can substantially reduce the carbon footprint of a product while at the same time guaranteeing its safety and superior product quality. Both the Mam Original Pure soother and its protective packaging will be on display at the Borealis K 2022 stand in October.

In their efforts to decarbonise and reach their sustainability targets, many industry sectors are seeking safe and cost-efficient alternatives for plastics made using fossil-based feedstock. Grades in the Bornewables portfolio are often the ideal replacement solution. Using renewable Neste RE feedstock derived for this collaboration solely from vegetable oil origin waste and residue streams, the Bornewables are produced according to the mass balance model which enables circular polyolefins to be tracked, traced, and verified throughout the entire value chain. Upstream partner Neste supplies Neste RE feedstock consisting of renewable propane to Borealis for dehydrogenation. It is first converted to renewable propylene, then to renewable PP at Borealis’ own ISCC PLUS certified production facilities in Belgium. As a drop-in solution on the production line, the Bornewables are commercially available in Europe and are suitable for use in a wide range of applications, including food packaging.

“In line with our EverMinds initiatives to work with partners along the value chain to accelerate action on circularity, we strive to offer innovative and circular material solutions that help our partners and customers attain their own ambitious climate and sustainability targets – with this, we re-invent essentials for sustainable living,” says Peter Voortmans, Borealis Global Commercial Director Consumer Products.“
The collaboration with Neste and Mam is a prime example of how upstream and downstream partners can come together to accelerate plastics circularity.”

“The Mam Original Pure soothers show how renewable feedstock such as Neste RE has become a viable alternative to conventional fossil feedstock even in sensitive applications,” says Maria Carcolé, Neste Head of Brand Owner Management from Renewable Polymers & Chemicals business unit. “We are happy to contribute to new products with significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions while helping maintain product safety and performance at the highest level.”

“After nearly a decade of intensive research and as a next milestone in our sustainability efforts, we are now very proud to launch our Mam Original Pure soother range made of renewably-sourced raw materials. The new product range is made for the healthy growth of babies and contributes to sustainable development that secures the future of our planet,” says Peter Röhrig, CEO and Founder of Mam.

Sabic’s New IR-transparent, Solderable Exte Resin Supports Upcoming Shift From Pluggable to Co-Packaged Optics to Help Boost Data Center Speed and Scale

Sabic’s New IR-transparent, Solderable Exte Resin Supports Upcoming Shift From Pluggable to Co-Packaged Optics to Help Boost Data Center Speed and Scale

Sabic, a global leader in the chemical industry, is launching here today at the ECOC Exhibition 2022, in booth #584, Extem RH1016UCL resin, a new ultra-high-heat, near-infrared (IR)-transparent grade well-suited for injection-molded lenses used in co-packaged optical transceivers and other optical connectors. Extem RH1016UCL resin is one of the first IR-transparent thermoplastics that can robustly withstand the 260°C peak temperature of printed circuit board (PCB) reflow soldering while maintaining dimensional stability of the molded part. This capability helps enable optical connectors to be mounted with other components in one step, avoiding the separate assembly and alignment processes that are required for lower-temperature lens materials. The new Extem resin also provides high-throughput, precision micro-molding capability for enhanced productivity. Together with optical design freedom and breakthrough high-temperature performance, this new resin can help customers transition from pluggable optics to co-packaged optics that support increased data center speed, scale and energy efficiency. Extem RH1016UCL resin has been validated by a major technology OEM in the United States.

The new Extem RH1016UCL resin will be featured in a presentation by SABIC’s Chief Scientist, Gabrie Hoogland, at the International Symposium for Optical Interconnect in Data Centres, part of ECOC 2022. His presentation, titled “Novel Thermoplastic Resins Well-Suited for Optical Interconnects,” will take place on September 21 at 1:30 p.m. CET in the Congress Center (Room Delhi).

“Co-packaged optics are a next-generation technology that can help increase data center reliability and reduce power usage and costs by bringing the optics much closer to the main switching ASIC,” said Florian Jung, global business manager, Ultem and Extem, Sabic’s Specialties Business. “Producing complex, miniaturized lenses and arrays for co-packaged optics calls for new materials that can overcome the design, manufacturing scalability and system cost drawbacks of glass. Sabic’s new extem RH1016UCL resin addresses these needs while helping to advance this emerging technology and opening new opportunities to help improve PCB integration density and energy efficiency.”

Moving Optics onto the Board
As data centers strive to accommodate demands for more bandwidth and faster transmission rates, network packet switching is experiencing higher power usage and greater latency. Co-packaged optics offer a means of reducing both. Co-packaging optical connectors with application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) used for Ethernet switching, and relocating them to the PCB, can reduce the power required to drive the interface between these components.

In contrast to pluggable optics, co-packaged optics place higher demands on materials. They must be able to retain their shape during the stresses of the PCB assembly process, which includes very high reflow soldering temperatures of up to 260°C. While glass can withstand this heat, it is difficult to produce complex lenses and arrays using glass, and the parts typically require time-consuming secondary grinding and polishing. Molding glass components is possible, but it is expensive and difficult to scale.

Debuting a Breakthrough, Ultra-high-heat Thermoplastic
Extem RH1016UCL resin delivers multiple advantages for co-packaged optics. As a thermoplastic, it helps enable designers to create complicated geometries and leverage part integration. Good flow properties support thin-wall designs and efficient, multi-cavity molding. During PCB assembly, Extem RH1016UCL resin demonstrates excellent dimensional and optical stability to avoid part deformation and retain signal integrity. On top of this, the material’s high refractive index and near IR transparency help elevate lens performance. The availability of optical constants for Extem RH1016UCL resin in the materials database of Zemax OpticStudio helps optical designers create new and innovative interconnects.

“Using a special chemistry, we developed a new extem resin with very high heat resistance that now supports the placement of optical interconnects with thermoplastic lenses close to the Asic chip prior to PCB assembly,” said Gabrie Hoogland. “Co-packaging helps make the electronic signal path as short and seamless as possible to facilitate very high data transmission rates. To assist customers in adopting Extem RH1016UCL resin, Sabic’s global technology centers provide micro-molding capabilities, including state-of-the-art equipment to test optical properties and constants, metrology, reflow soldering stability and application (hydro)aging.”

At the ECOC Exhibition, Sabic is displaying parts molded from Extem RH1016UCL resin, including aspherical test lens and a mountable lens array with multi-fiber push-on (MPO) connector pins, as well as a 12-lens tool used for material testing. In addition, the company is featuring aspherical test lens and lens array molded from Sabic’s recently launch Ultem 3310TD resin, which targets optical transceiver collimator lenses used in single-mode fiber optic systems. There is also on display a pluggable MPO connector made with Ultem 1010 resin, which has been a popular choice for thermoplastic lenses for decades.

“Industry 4.0 stakeholders need real-time answers to what is happening in their manufacturing processes,” adds Cornelia Beyer, Managing Director & CEO of Sens Xpert. “Our unique approach unlocks the potential of fully data-driven productivity, delivering immediate quality and efficiency benefits to our customers in the plastics processing industry.”

The Sens Xpert technology adapts to any common thermosets, thermoplastics and elastomers processing technique, from injection, compression and transfer molding to thermoforming, vacuum infusion and autoclave curing. It connects with customers’ existing manufacturing and control systems through standard industrial interfaces and is offered as a cloud-based Equipment-as-a-Service (EaaS) solution. An intuitive Web App is provided for convenient on-site or remote user access.

Use cases in major industry segments, such as in the manufacturing of automotive composite wheels and airplane wing components, have shown significant increases in overall equipment efficiency (OEE), including solid return of investment (ROI). Similar solutions can easily be implemented in other industries.

Visitors of K 2022 from October 19 to 26 in Düsseldorf, Germany, will find sens Xpert at Netzsch Process Intelligence’s Booth C36 in Hall 12.
