Sabic Announces the Upcoming Launch of LNP Elcres FST Copolymers for Rail Interior Wall Panels, Featuring EN 45545 Compliance and Custom Colorability

Sabic, a global leader in the chemical industry, today announced the upcoming launch of LNP Elcres FST2734E copolymer, a flame-smoke-toxicity extrusion grade that is well-suited for wall and ceiling panels in passenger trains, subways and trams. Customers can benefit from this new specialty material, which complies with the European railway standard for fire safety, EN 45545 R1-HL2, and meets key rail OEM requirements: high modulus for durability, molded-in custom color for paint elimination and branding, ultraviolet (UV) resistance to help minimize yellowing and chemical resistance to facilitate cleaning removal without causing environmental stress cracking (ESC). As a thermoplastic, LNP Elcres FST2734E copolymer offers customers distinct advantages over stamped metals and thermoset resins, such as expanded design freedom, system cost reduction, up to 20 percent less weight for easier maintenance and the potential for easier recyclability.

To help increase the sustainability of rail interiors, the new copolymer will also be supplied in a bio-based version with the same regulatory compliance, performance properties and processing parameters as the fossil-based grade. Bio-based LNP Elcres FST2734EB copolymer is formulated with approximately 55 percent renewable feedstock from waste materials such as crude tall oil. An Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) CO2 equivalent analysis showed this product reduced carbon emissions by approximately 28 percent vs. fossil-based counterparts. Both LNP Elcres FST grades will be previewed at InnoTrans 2022, September 20-23 in Berlin, Germany, in hall 5.1, booth #332.

“As travel rebounds, the rail industry is looking for ways to increase the number of passengers – and one promising approach is to upgrade the interior of the train to deliver a more satisfying customer experience and improve sustainability,” said Joshua Chiaw, Director, Business Management, LNP & Noryl, Specialties, Sabic. “We are addressing passenger rail trends by expanding our portfolio of specialty materials to help meet the latest requirements. By developing new grades that comply with stricter regulations, offer system cost advantages, and enhance aesthetics, durability and sustainability, we aim to support industry efforts to maximize the appeal of rail travel as a cost-effective, safe, reliable and convenient choice.”

Compliance with European Fire Safety Standard
The upcoming LNP Elcres FST2734E and LNP Elcres FST2734EB grades meet the strict fire safety requirements of EN 45545 R1-HL2 for horizontal / vertical interior surfaces, including ceilings and walls. The regulations are intended to minimize the effects of heat, smoke and toxic gases on passengers and staff. The new materials are among the few colorable thermoplastics capable of robust compliance with the European regulation, which is considered the global benchmark.

Sabic’s LNP Elcres FST2734E copolymer – and its bio-based version, LNP Elcrin FST2734EB copolymer – are extrusion grades that are well suited for wall and ceiling panels in passenger trains, subways and trams. Customers can benefit from these new specialty materials, which comply with the European railway standard EN 45545 R1-HL2 and meet key rail OEM requirements.

LNP Elcres FST2734E copolymer and its bio-based equivalent, which are developed for extrusion processes, produce sheets that can be thermoformed. The new grades are well suited to panel thicknesses between 2-5 mm.

Design and System Cost Advantages
Compared to metal and thermoset resins, LNP Elcres FST2734E copolymer and its bio-based version provide greater freedom to design new panel configurations and integrate aesthetics, parts and functions without the need for secondary operations. For instance, decorative film can be applied to thermoplastic panels during extrusion, whereas a thermoset part would require a separate application step. Brackets and fasteners can be integrated using laser welding instead of requiring adhesives. Likewise, the material’s molded-in color capability eliminates the cost, time and emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with painting, which is typically used for metal and thermoset panels.

The new materials’ excellent chemical resistance makes it easy to clean to help extend the useful life of the part. These grades are scheduled for commercial availability in late 2022 or early 2023.

“Our LNP FST products for rail panels demonstrate the success of Sabic’s technical experts in solving major challenges around compliance, quality, durability, cost control and sustainability,” noted Luc Govaerts, Technology Director, Specialties, Sabic. “In developing these new grades, we worked closely with customers to understand their needs and preferences, including requests for bio-based, drop-in alternatives that strengthen environmental protection. These specialty copolymers represent a new generation of materials for panels and open up new possibilities for the industry.”

Growing Material Solutions for the Rail Industry
At the show, Sabic will also be featuring the company’s new LNP Thermocomp AM DC0041XA51 compound, a pellet-fed additive manufacturing (PFAM) grade that is well-suited for rail seating and other large parts, and four EN 45545-compliant LNP Elcres FST materials for extrusion and injection molding of rail seating components.

With New York Market Week starting today, Devan Chemicals, part of the Pulcra Group, has unveiled its new bio-based CBD capsules. It’s also showcasing R-Vital innovations and expanded cooling solutions for foam, including a bio-based version.

Devan’s next generation R-Vital well-being technology enables manufacturers to boost their textiles with a range of microencapsulated active ingredients, for example powerful antioxidants, that are absorbed by our skin after being released from the capsule due to friction. Now the company has launched bio-based CBD capsules.

R-Vital NTL: THC-free CBD bio-based capsules for a good night’s sleep
Millions of people suffer from insufficient sleep due to insomnia or other sleep disorders. To address this, Devan has added cannabidiol, or CBD, to its R-Vital NTL range of microencapsulated active ingredients derived from renewable biological resources. The rich CBD extract is known to have a balancing effect that could amongst other things help to facilitate a good night’s sleep.

The R-Vital NTL range also includes Avocado seed oil. Avocado seed oil contains antioxidants and has very high hydration abilities.

The CBD bio-capsules are part of the R-Vital NTL range. The shell structure of the NTL capsules is based on a bio-based polymer and biodegradability tests showed very good results. The R-Vital NTL range includes Aloe Vera, waste-material based Avocado Seed Oil and Vitamin E. Aloe Vera and Avocado Seed Oil are known to have moisturizing properties and Vitamin E is known to protect skin from free radicals and premature ageing. The bio-based range, R-Vital NTL, is now durable up to 30 washes.

R-Vital range: increased wash durability up to 50 washes
Devan is also pushing the performance of its R-Vital well-being range in terms of wash durability. New recipes improve wash resistance to up to 50 cycles in both cotton and PES based fabrics. The enhanced textiles will last longer. This is a plus for the environment.

Devan’s general R-Vital range has now an increased wash durability up to 50 washes. The formulae has been amended to improve wash resistance even more and at the same time keep economical add-on costs in mind.

Tones of Cool (Bio): Cooling on foam – for improved sleep quality
Research shows that bedroom interiors are getting warmer every year, due to both better insulation and climate change. On top of that, in the Home Textile industry new foams are being launched continuously. In response, Devan has developed a foam-specific cooling system, expanding its Tones of Cool cooling range with a specific foam-solution. The instant cool sensation that Tones of Cool provides is an important feature for consumers. A bio-based version, Tones of Cool Bio, is also available.

Cost-effective, Green Solutions for the Mobility Industry

Cost-effective, Green Solutions for the Mobility Industry

At this year’s IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover,Germany, Fronius showcased its innovations around intelligent charging management, charging solutions for electric cars, and complete solutions for e-mobility, load management, and energy supply.

It’s the first time that the Business Unit Solar Energy of Fronius International Gmbh attended IAA Transportation.

“Fronius Solar Energy has been a pioneer in energy solutions for over 30 years,” explains Wolfgang Hink, Head of Energy Supply Solutions & Services, Fronius International Gmbh. “Carbon neutrality and cost effectiveness should not be seen as mutually exclusive. Our aim is to help you implement the pressing energy transition in an economical, intelligent, and flexible manner.”

Fronius impressively demonstrated its e-mobility solutions at booth D12 in Hall 24:

Fronius EMIL. Intelligent charging management for electric vehicles

The latest Fronius e-mobility innovation is Fronius EMIL – an intelligent charging management solution for electric car fleets, which has been developed for commercial customers. Power is intelligently supplied to the vehicles with user-based charging and is individually coordinated with the company-wide electricity consumption.

Fronius EMIL ensures that lines and equipment are not overloaded, thereby guaranteeing operational reliability. This makes the infrastructure more cost-effective and saves money. The intelligent charging management can be implemented anywhere and is extremely flexible. For example, any number of utility meters and charging points can be controlled without any additional hardware.

Fronius Wattpilot. Designed to move.

More and more companies are upgrading their vehicle fleets to electric cars, for obvious reasons. E-mobility is more sustainable than fossil fuels and also brings financial benefits. Driving is more economical in an electric car and the intelligent Fronius Wattpilot charging station optimizes these costs even more thanks to flexible charging.

E-mobility in combination with photovoltaics (PV) is the best example of a practical yet cost-effective way to implement the energy transition.

The Fronius Wattpilot comes in two versions – the static Wattpilot Home for the fleet of electric vehicles at the company’s premises and the mobile Wattpilot Go for when users are on the move.

Fronius IPP. Solar energy without the investment

Fronius offers complete e-mobility, load management, and energy supply solutions. “Combining photovoltaics and e-mobility is a particularly rewarding setup. That’s why we also provide customers with complete concepts, from the requirements analysis through installation, maintenance, and servicing,” details Wolfgang Hink.

Electric cars can be charged in a particularly cost-effective and flexible manner with power from a company’s own photovoltaic system. What’s more, charging the electric vehicle fleet in this way allows a large amount of the company’s self-generated solar power to be used at source, which in turn means the PV system delivers a full return on investment even more quickly.

In addition to the economic advantages, ecological arguments are playing an ever-increasing role. Charging electric vehicles with green, local power from an in-house PV system also reduces CO 2 emissions.

“The mobility industry needs cost-effective solutions to contribute to the energy transition. In Fronius Solar Energy you will find an experienced partner to help you implement these solutions,” concludes Wolfgang Hink.
