Zincografia Empolese and Ario Label Solution, a Winning Partnership for UV Flexo Printing

Zincografia Empolese and Ario Label Solution, a Winning Partnership for UV Flexo Printing

First-time award entry succeeded winning the 2nd prize in UV Flexo Printing.

Asahi Photoproducts, a pioneer in flexographic photopolymer plate development, today reported that its customers, Zincografia Empolese and Ario Label Solution, have been recognized with a prestigious award from the Italian flexographic association, Associazone Tecnica Italiana per la Flessografia (ATIF), capturing second place for Best UV Flexo printing with their first ever award entry. Zincografia Empolese has over 30 years experiences in the manufacturing of flexo plates for different markets. With locations in San Miniato (PI) and Manerbio (BS) Italy, the network guarantees sales and assistance services all over the country. The winning application, was printed by Ario Label, located in Bergamo, Italy; the company offers complete solutions in the production of adhesive and self-adhesive labels, automatic identification, and self-adhesive packaging.

Second Prize for Best UV Flexo Printing

The job the company’s submitted was produced for Ario customer SACLA and was printed in four UV ink colors with an extra three spot colors, partially printed on cold foil using a 156 l/inch screen using Asahi plate technology.

The award ceremony was conducted during ATIF’s annual trade association meeting on November 15, 2022, in Bologna, Italy.

Empolese co-owner Noemi Bisoli, states, “We operate with two ESKO 5080 XPS Crystal LED plate imaging lines across all our supported segments, from corrugated board to flexible packaging and high-quality label applications. We also support the design process with industry-leading design and workflow solutions. In addition, we installed a new AWPTM water-wash platemaking processor to be in line with the growing trend of more sustainable flexographic plate production.”

“We are extremely proud to have been recognized with this award especially since we are a first-time entry,” added Marco Borali, Managing Director of the Ario Label Solution printing company. Ario Label Solution has three locations, in Turin, Venice and Bergamo, enabling them to serve a broad array of Italian customers. They operate with five UV flexo presses. Borali’s vision for the future of Ario is to harmonize the work environment for employees with the latest technologies for production, R&D and training in a brand-new spacious building. “The building was chosen, with sustainability in mind,” Borali notes. “This includes photovoltaic panels on the roof as well as a strong effort to drive out plastic waste in production. “Brand owners have been asking for recycled material to be used for some time. Now they have expanded their requests with questions about the actual carbon footprint their production creates. By putting photovoltaic panels on the roof, we can partially use our own energy in our production. The partnership between Ario and Zincografia Empolese is a perfect match for today and into the future, combining Ario’s energy and waste reduction efforts with Empolese’s Asahi CleanPrint plate technology.”

The winning application was produced using CMYK and three spot color UV inks, partially printed on cold foil.

“The collaboration between Empolese and Ario is a good example of how trade shops and printing companies can work together to improve the productivity, profitability and sustainability of flexographic printing,” said Andrea Belloli, Asahi’s Italian Branch Manager. “Using AWPTM CleanPrint flexo plates is an excellent step in that direction. We congratulate them on receiving this prestigious award and are looking forward to working with them in the future as they continue to find more ways to reduce their respective carbon footprints.”

Devan Launches Purissimo NTL, a Full Biobased, Biodegradable Allergen Control Technology

Devan Launches Purissimo NTL, a Full Biobased, Biodegradable Allergen Control Technology

Belgian textile innovator Devan Chemicals will launch Purissimo NTL, a biobased and readily biodegradable allergen control technology, at the upcoming Heimtextil trade show in Frankfurt (January 10-13, 2023). It is based on the well-known probiotic encapsulation technology and aims to improve the lives of people who suffer from allergies. It can be applied to textiles during the finishing stage of the textile manufacturing process.

Worldwide, the prevalence of allergic diseases has continued to rise in the industrialised world for more than 50 years, according to the World Health Organisation. Allergies have an impact on the quality of life and are associated with other medical conditions. Devan is now launching Purissimo NTL, a natural allergen control technology that cleans up pet dander, pollen and house dust mite allergens in textiles throughout the home. The technology is based on encapsulated probiotics, which are natural microorganisms similar in kind to those you can find in yoghurt, cheese and other probiotic food.

Devan has many years of experience with probiotics. The company introduced probiotics in textiles already in 2010.

Purissimo NTL is based on Devan’s already well-established probiotics, incorporated into a new microcapsule shell. The shell is based on a natural crosslinked biobased polymer, which results in microcapsules that are up to 97% biobased and readily biodegradable (OECD 301B).

Firstly, dormant probiotic bacteria (spores) are encapsulated. The microcapsule product is then integrated into textiles. Friction opens the capsules and releases the spores. The spores absorb humidity, self-activate and start to multiply. The probiotic bacteria start to consume the allergens that cause allergic reactions and asthma. Due to lower allergen concentration, individuals with respiratory allergies such as house dust mite matter, pet allergens and pollen allergens will have milder to no symptoms and hence a better well-being feeling.

Devan Launches Purissimo NTL, a Full Biobased, Biodegradable Allergen Control Technology

Purissimo NTL can be used on a wide range of textiles such as mattresses, pillows, bedcovers, blankets but also upholstered furniture, carpets, curtains and public transportation and pet items, such as bedding. It is Oeko-tex compliant, has a long-lasting effect and a wash durability up to 30 washes is achievable.

ALPLA on Course for Success With Record Turnover of 5.1 Billion Euros

ALPLA on Course for Success With Record Turnover of 5.1 Billion Euros

27.5 per cent increase due to growth and rise in costs

The ALPLA Group can look back on a successful financial year 2022 in spite of the crisis. Sales of 5.1 billion euros exceeded the previous year’s figure by 27.5 per cent. In addition to the company’s growth strategy, the record turnover reflects the significantly higher costs for energy, materials, staff and transport. In 2023, the packaging and recycling specialist will focus on expanding its injection moulding capacities, investing in recycling, expanding its Pharma division and researching alternative materials.

ALPLA continued its international growth trajectory in 2022, expanding production capacities, increasing staff numbers and posting sales growth of 27.5 per cent. The international specialist for packaging solutions and recycling therefore achieved a positive annual result despite massive increases in energy prices and a shortage of raw materials. Newly opened sites, acquisitions and expansions resulted in more than 1,000 additional employees. The number of plants increased from 177 to 190.

‘The packaging industry will be dealing with high costs, changes in demand and changing consumer behaviour for a long time to come. We use efficiency, innovation and recycling expertise to realise safe, affordable and sustainable plastic solutions in times of crisis too,’ emphasises ALPLA CEO Philipp Lehner. In addition to targeted acquisitions, the key factors contributing to the success were close and long-standing partnerships, strong regional roots and the expedited expansion of recycling capacities.

Growth markets, injection moulding and recycling

The long-term aim is for the company to grow by four to five per cent annually. In addition to capacity expansions in its core business, ALPLA is also planning strategic investments in injection moulding, increased involvement in the pharmaceutical sector and the expansion of the global circular economy. At the same time, there will be research into alternative, bio-based and biodegradable materials. ‘We are striving for long-term sustainable growth, strengthening our global presence, promoting recyclable products, minimising the use of resources and energy consumption, and expanding our portfolio,’ announces Lehner.

The focus is primarily on the growth markets of Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America. In the area of recycling, ALPLA has been investing more than 50 million euros annually in capacity expansions and technology development since 2021. For there to be more packaging which is both recyclable and affordable, closed loops and sufficient materials are needed. ALPLA is therefore planning to double the annual production of recycled materials at its own plants by 2026 and is supporting the development and optimisation of local collection systems around the world.

Borealis Acquires a Majority Stake in Renasci Signalling On-Going Commitment to Leading the Transformation to a Circular Economy

Borealis Acquires a Majority Stake in Renasci Signalling On-Going Commitment to Leading the Transformation to a Circular Economy

  • Borealis increases its financial investment in Renasci to acquire a majority shareholding position of 50.01%
  • Investment will provide Borealis increasing access to chemically recycled feedstock, strengthening the Borcycle C portfolio of virgin-level grade recycled products
  • EverMindsTM in action: Borealis will leverage its market position and innovative technological capabilities to unlock the potential of Renasci’s Smart Chain Processing concept to accelerate progress on circularity

Borealis, one of the world’s leading providers of advanced and circular polyolefin solutions and a European market leader in base chemicals, fertilizers and the mechanical recycling of plastics, has acquired a majority stake in Renasci N.V., a Belgium-based provider of innovative recycling solutions and the creator of the novel Smart Chain Processing (SCP) concept.

Borealis announced the acquisition of a 10% stake in Renasci in July 2021; today it announces an increase of its investment to acquire a majority stake of 50.01%, signalling on-going confidence in the potential of Renasci’s patented SCP concept to drive the circular transformation. The investment is an important component of Borealis’ strategy to reach its ambitious circular goals, which target a six-fold increase in the volume of circular products and solutions to 600 kilotonnes by 2025, rising to 1.8 million tonnes by 2030. The acquisition will support Borealis to reach these goals by providing increasing long-term access to chemically recycled feedstock from Renasci’s Ostend facility and through enabling access to key circular technologies.

SCP is unique because it enables the processing of multiple waste streams using different recycling technologies under one roof, resulting in exceptionally high valorisation of waste. Through leveraging its market access, knowhow, and innovative technological capabilities, Borealis will accelerate the implementation of the SCP concept and will also explore opportunities for replicating the model in strategic locations.

“With this investment, we mark another milestone on our path to realising our Strategy 2030 goals. Our acquisition of a controlling stake in Renasci has the potential to unlock significant progress on circularity for our entire industry, and is proof of the EverMindsTM spirit in action,” says Borealis CEO Thomas Gangl.

“We are committed to leading our industry towards a more sustainable future, and this acquisition is pivotal to our success. Renasci and its SCP concept are perfectly aligned to Borealis’ circular cascade model, which sits at the heart of our ambition to become circular in plastic and in carbon,” says Lucrèce Foufopoulos, Borealis Executive Vice President of Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions and Innovation & Technology.

Strengthening Borealis’ BorcycleTM C portfolio

The controlling stake in Renasci will support Borealis to further strengthen its BorcycleTM C range of product offerings by providing future supply security of chemically recycled feedstock. Borcycle C is a portfolio of transformational chemical recycling solutions with ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) PLUS-certified content based on the mass balance approach, giving polyolefin-based, post-consumer waste another life. Chemically identical to products derived from fossil feedstock, Borcycle C solutions are suitable for all applications, including those that are subject to stringent quality and safety regulations such as healthcare and food packaging, which cannot always be met using mechanically recycled materials. “Following 18 months of successful cooperation, we’re pleased to receive this increased investment from Borealis signalling its ongoing confidence in the Smart Chain Processing concept to drive circularity. Borealis’ strategic market position and commitment to the circular economy mean it is ideally placed to develop and implement the SCP concept, as well as to leverage our combined technological capabilities to unlock further circular progress” says Gert Vanderseypen, General Manager, Renasci.
