Clariant Completes Acquisition of BASF’s U.S. Attapulgite Business Assets

Clariant Completes Acquisition of BASF’s U.S. Attapulgite Business Assets

  • Clariant acquired BASF’s U.S. Attapulgite business assets for USD 60 million in cash
  • Attapulgite supply strengthens Clariant’s leading technology position in the growing markets for the purification of edible oils and renewable fuels
  • Acquisition extends Clariant’s North American footprint
  • Underpins Clariant’s bolt-on acquisition strategy and sustainability focus

Clariant, a focused, sustainable, and innovative specialty chemical company, today announces that it has completed the acquisition of BASF’s U.S. based Attapulgite business assets for USD 60 million in cash. Structured as an asset deal, the transaction includes the transfer of land as well as mining rights, the processing facility, and inventories, which will be integrated into Clariant’s Functional Minerals business. The finalized deal also includes an agreement for the long-term supply of attapulgite-based products to BASF. The transaction will improve the EBITDA margin profile of Clariant’s Business Area Natural Resources while supporting the company’s path towards reaching its 2025 targets.

Adsorbent clays, such as attapulgite, are an important enabler for growth in the purification of edible oils and renewable fuels. In edible oil they remove contaminants thereby enhancing the shelf-life and oil quality, whereas in renewable fuels they play a key role in removing contaminants during the pre-treatment process, thereby protecting the catalyst. This enables a particularly stable and economically viable process. Clariant offers unique technologies for the purification of biodiesel to reduce greenhouse gases in road transportation and for the purification of pyrolysis oil to enable the chemical recycling of plastics. With this acquisition Clariant’s Functional Minerals business will increase its production capacity and subsequently its footprint in the attractive North American market.

“This acquisition is a perfect example of our disciplined approach to bolt-on acquisitions as it provides tangible synergies, strengthens one of our core segments and brings us closer to our 2025 targets,” said Conrad Keijzer, Chief Executive Officer at Clariant. “At the same time, the acquisition is another step forward in the energy transition away from fossil-based fuels.”

The newly acquired attapulgite business is one of the largest miners and producers of attapulgite in North America. It encompasses mining operations in Georgia as well as Florida and processing operations in Quincy, Florida. This business is well recognized in the industry for its unique combination of mineral quality, mine reserve size, and strategic location. It produces attapulgite based products for a wide range of applications and end markets, and generated sales of approximately USD 36 million in 2020.

“We are very pleased with the completion of this acquisition in the U.S.,” comments Angela Cackovich, President of Adsorbents & Additives at Clariant. “Along with a strategically valuable business, we also welcome 75 highly qualified professionals. Our increased presence in the region will allow for greater customer proximity and enhances our ability to meet the demands of an attractive, rapidly expanding market.”

North America is a strategic region for Clariant with numerous growth opportunities in the edible oil and renewable fuel markets. With its expertise and via this acquisition, Clariant will increase its production capacity to be able to meet the growing demand for renewable fuels whilst also maintaining its supply integrity to the edible oils market, more specifically by expanding its Tonsil range. Clariant’s Tonsil bleaching earths are the gold standard for efficient and sustainable oil, fat, and biofuel purification. The product range has been used successfully to remove impurities from crude oils and fats for more than 100 years.

Solvay’s Sustainable Alve-One Foaming Solutions Win 2022 Pierre Potier Prize

Solvay’s Sustainable Alve-One Foaming Solutions Win 2022 Pierre Potier Prize

Solvay, a leading supplier of advanced materials, has announced that its Alve-One foaming solutions have been awarded the 2022 Pierre Potier Prize during a ceremony organized by France Chimie on October 27 in Paris. Alve-One is a family of safe and eco-friendly, patented chemical foaming agents developed for use in thermoplastic foams.

The innovative Alve-One technology is based on functionalized sodium bicarbonate, offering foam resin producers, additive manufacturers and plastic converters a uniquely safe, sustainable and efficient alternative to incumbent hazardous blowing agents. The Alve-One technology protects people throughout the entire life cycle of the foaming solutions, from storage, handling, transport and processing to the final foamed products, including recycling since it does not generate residues.

“We are very pleased to receive this prestigious prize, which acknowledges our firm and continuous commitment to sustainability” said Karine Cavalier, Business Line Manager. “Solvay is ready to collaborate with the plastic foam industry in the transition to its Alve-One portfolio, which will take their foaming business to new heights, stepping up innovation, efficiency and sustainability.”

Solvay’s Alve-One foaming solutions are a perfect example of ‘safe and sustainable by design’ chemistry, well aligned with the EU Green Deal and Solvay’s One Planet commitment. They provide a superior alternative over potentially hazardous and/or toxic blowing agents as well as expandable microspheres currently in the market, without compromising performance or efficiency. In particular, the technology has been accredited as a safe substitute for azodicarbonamide (ADCA), which has been classified by the Reach Regulation as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC).

Furthermore, Alve-One foaming solutions provide sought-after benefits, e.g. in white foam formulations, where they reduce the need for titanium dioxide (TiO2) while enabling odorless foams and minimizing the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC). With 10 times lower CO2 equivalent emissions, 34 times lower water and 22 times lower energy consumption than ADCA, they also help users reduce the overall environmental footprint of their processes and products.

“Each ton of ADCA replaced by Alve-One in plastic foams is a step towards a more responsible and sustainable chemistry for the well-being of all of us and our planet” added Jean-Yves Seguin, Project Manager at Solvay.

Due to their inherent versatility, Alve-One foaming solutions can be used in a wide range of thermoplastic polymers and are compatible with most additives in plastic foaming. Manufactured in Europe, they are globally available in a unique set of formulations, each developed to address specific application requirements in areas including primarily automotive, footwear, building & construction, consumer goods and packaging.

Alve-One has been officially identified as a sustainable alternative for foamed thermoplastics by multiple organizations, such as the International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec), the Solar Impulse Foundation, which recognized it as an Efficient Solution, and Inovyn, which gave it an Innovation Award in 2019.

Solvay has already won the Pierre Potier award in:

  • 2021, for its Addibond innovation, high-performance specialty additives for paint and adhesive adhesion on aluminum and galvanized steel.
  • 2019, for its AgRho S-Boost innovation, a seed treatment product of bio-sourced origin that stimulates plant growth and develops root architecture.

Why Your Brand is Your Most Precious Asset

Why Your Brand is Your Most Precious Asset

By Mark Hinder, Responsible for Business Development Programmes, Graphic Communications, Ricoh Europe

How healthy is your brand? Is it flourishing or languishing? These may not be questions that print business executives ask themselves often. But they should be.

As the third book in Ricoh’s Modern Marketing series, on Brand, explains, your brand is your company’s heart and soul. It’s the air that it breathes. It’s the personality it exudes. It is in fact the prime reason that future clients will buy into you, and buy from you again and again.

No matter what size your business is, your brand is the most important investment you’ll make. And to be perfectly clear, we’re not just talking about a logo and a slogan here. A business brand encompasses every aspect of a company – employees, market, customers, and industry.

So, unequivocally, a strong brand is a formidable asset. And Ricoh’s guide explains how building brand equity can, at the same time, build client loyalty. The route to this goal is defining your brand by what you excel in, for example, service, client experience or innovation. It should also reflect who your clients are; people who share similar values and ideas. Your brand ultimately represents who you are as a business, and what you believe in.

Because in most sectors the difference between most competing products and services is relatively small. And so most successful brands tend to focus on what’s important to their customers rather than the capabilities of their offerings. They find a way to demonstrate how their beliefs and outlook align with their customers – they show how they share a similar “attitude”.

A brand attitude approach means you can connect with your clients on a deeper level. Especially if you develop a brand story that really resonates with them.

As the guide explains, just like people, all brands have a back story. Your brand story should tap into this, bringing out your business’s heritage, vision, values, and what it stands for in a crowded marketplace.

Your brand story can help set you apart from your competition. You have to dare to be different. And to do that with clarity, consistency, and passion. Using your brand to inform and guide all your marketing activity.

You have to be able to assess how well your brand is working in your market. The guide makes it very clear that if you don’t know how well your brand is being received, then you won’t have the full picture of how happy your clients are with your company. Just because they may be buying from you right now doesn’t tell the full story. What is it, exactly, that they’re buying? Is it you, or your products? If your brand is right, they should be buying you and your products. Research is key here and there are powerful tools available to help PSPs gain rich insights into for example, how their brand is resonating with clients and how it aligns with their needs.

If the concept of branding does not immediately fire your imagination, then we can replace it with reputation. All businesses care about their reputation. They want their customers to see what’s special about them and what drives them and what they value. If you could bottle the essence of what inspires you to build your business, then that’s your brand. This is why it matters to you.

The other books in the series, titled Audience, Vision, Engage and Optimise, will be explored in future blogs. Together they provide a practical, structured, and enjoyable route to business growth and profitability.

They support the completion of a tailored marketing plan with the Ricoh Modern Marketing Canvas. The canvas comprises four sections – Your Business, Your Marketing, Your Customers and Budget, and is a core part of Ricoh’s EDGE business development consultancy service. With the learning from all the books, each section of the canvas can be completed to provide a full picture of business marketing attributes, marketing structure and marketing audience.

Ineos Signs Agreement With Plastic Energy for Its Largest Plant to Produce 100,000 Tonnes of Raw Materials From Plastic Waste.

Ineos Signs Agreement With Plastic Energy for Its Largest Plant to Produce 100,000 Tonnes of Raw Materials From Plastic Waste.

  • The agreement follows a collaboration between both companies to explore the construction of a commercial scale plant which began in 2020.
  • The recycled material has already been successfully converted into virgin-quality polymer through the Ineos cracker at Köln, Germany, and used by selected customers and brands.
As well as reducing the risk of plastic pollution re-use of ‘end of life’ plastic will also help to reduce total emissions, supporting the transition to net zero.
  • Rob Ingram, CEO Ineos Olefins & Polymers Europe said: “This is further evidence of our commitment to creating a more sustainable future for our industry and in particular developing a circular economy that keeps valuable materials in use and out of the environment.”

Ineos Olefins & Polymers Europe and Plastic Energy, have today announced a Memorandum Of Understanding to produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of recycled raw materials from plastic waste. This will be the largest use of Plastic Energy technology on the market. These new raw materials will enable a circular approach to produce essential plastic items that meet the requirements of demanding food contact and medical applications.

Production will be based in Köln, Germany. Plastic Energy’s patented Tactm recycling technology will turn difficult-to-recycle plastic waste otherwise destined for incineration or landfill, into a valuable raw material Tacoiltm, a Plastic Energy product that can be used to create virgin-quality polymers.

Ineos will also invest in technology to process the Tacoiltm further before feeding it to their steam crackers, where it will replace traditional raw materials derived from oil. This use of advanced recycling enables plastic waste to be turned into new, virgin-quality materials that can be used in demanding applications where safety standards require the highest level of product purity and performance.

As well as reducing the risk of plastic pollution and the use of fossil-based raw materials, the circular re-use of ‘end of life’ plastic will also help to reduce total emissions, supporting the transition to net zero.

Ineos and Plastic Energy first announced a collaboration to explore the construction of a commercial scale plant in 2020. Working together TACOIL has already been successfully converted into virgin-quality polymer through the Ineos cracker at Köln, Germany, and used by selected customers and brands to demonstrate the viability and demand for materials from advanced recycling. As a result, Ineos and Plastic Energy are now delighted to announce this extension of their partnership. Production is targeted for the end of 2026.

Rob Ingram, CEO, Ineos O&P Europe North, said: “Advanced recycling is an essential part of the solution for turning plastic waste into materials that can be used for demanding applications. Our position is that advanced recycling has to be done at scale in order to make the process environmentally and commercially viable. I’m therefore delighted to take this first step with Plastic Energy towards building that kind of capability from day one.”

“This is further evidence of our commitment to creating a more sustainable future for our industry and in particular developing a circular economy that keeps valuable materials in use and out of the environment.”

Carlos Monreal, Founder and CEO of Plastic Energy, said: “We are pleased to announce this project with Ineos to further scale our portfolio of plants in Europe. Tacoiltm from our recycling process has already been used in products that have been commercialised on the European market, and we look forward to working with Ineos to enable the production of more recycled content.”

Using a mass balance approach, an independent, third-party organization such as ISCC or RSB will certify that fossil-based feedstocks have been substituted by the new, recycled materials and ensure that recycled benefits are being accounted for correctly. A mass balance approach enables co-processing of circular and fossil feedstocks, a key step in the transition to a circular economy.

More on Ineos O&P Europe’s recycling solutions

This is further evidence of Ineos O&P Europe’s commitment to taking action across the value chain to create a more sustainable future. Advanced recycling solutions are complementary to its Recycl-IN range, which compounds mechanically recycled materials with highly engineered polymers to produce products that enable converters and brand owners to meet consumer demands for an increase in the use of recycled materials, while meeting high performance specifications.

Advanced recycling provides solutions for applications such as food contact and medical, while the Recycl-IN range targets non-food contact uses. The complementary nature of the two approaches is also reflected in the type and qualities of waste used for each.
