ELITE 5408G: COF Stable Polyethylene Resin From Dow

ELITE 5408G: COF Stable Polyethylene Resin From Dow

ELITE 5408G, the new COF stable Polyethylene resin from Dow is the answer to all your worries. As a global technology leader in polyethylene, Dow is always on the lookout for the next innovation. To address a current unmet need in the flexible packaging industry, we have created the co-efficient of friction (COF) stable resin – ELITE 5408G (1.0g/10min MI; 0.918 g/cm3 density). This resin provides stable COF of lamination films in both PE and PET layers, throughout the entire process of lamination, curing, storage and transportation. It offers higher efficiency on fast speed packaging lines by minimizing film breakages and interruptions. The COF stable resin also features excellent optical and sealing properties.

As shown in Figure below, we have tested it at elevated temperatures for 7 days and at room temperature conditions for upto a year. ELITE 5408G hardly goes through any change in COF compared to conventional metallocene LLDPEs used in PET//PE or other such laminates.

With ELITE 5408G, you do not have to add any external slip masterbatch to achieve lower COF. ELITE 5408G in the sealant layer is just enough!

This new grade balances seal strength and COF performance, enabling a smoother, faster and more efficient packaging process.

Not to mention, ELITE 5408G has the sealing performance same as Dow’s ELITE polyethylene resin family, a state-of-the-art sealant portfolio, providing impressive optical and sealing properties.

Several of our customers in India have already adopted to this innovative grade in different applications ranging from surface printed milk & edible oil films, laminates and more demanding thermoforming films. Other benefits which our customers in India have got after adopting ELITE 5408G are as below:

  • No dependency on local distributors to stock small quantities of permanent slip masterbatches
  • No powder deposition onto food packed in thermoformed trays by not using external slip masterbatches
  • Can ensure stable COF in export laminates to their customers
  • No change in COF in products which are exposed to high temperatures like UHT milk films or solvent base adhesive laminates
  • Can survive hot summer months in India without any issues on the packaging lines

SABIC and Japan Steel Works Collaborate on SABIC’s TF-BOPE Resin for Flexible Packaging

SABIC and Japan Steel Works Collaborate on SABIC’s TF-BOPE Resin for Flexible Packaging

  • Processability of SABIC LLDPE BX202 resin validated in extensive trials on biax film pilot line at JSW’ Technology Center in Japan
  • SABIC’s TF-BOPE resin supports down-gauging and corresponding reductions of up to 50 percent, offering a mono-PE film solution designed for end-of-life recycling in existing recycling streams for flexible packaging

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry has announced that The Japan Steel Works, Ltd. (JSW) has validated the use of SABIC LLDPE BX202, a linear low-density polyethylene resin specially developed for processing on tenter frame extrusion equipment for biaxially oriented PE (TF-BOPE) packaging film. The value chain collaboration endorses the use of SABIC’s TF-BOPE material on JSW film lines, extends the machine supplier’s footprint into the BOPE film market for flexible packaging, and underscores SABIC’s role as a forerunner in this market segment.

Sami Al-Osaimi, Executive Vice President Petrochemicals at SABIC commented, “There is a growing market trend and demand for mono-material solutions to facilitate the end-of-life recycling of used packaging products while at the same time supporting the efforts of brand owners and packaging manufacturers to down-gauge their applications and meet ambitious reduction targets. The partnership with JSW has confirmed our strong commitment to accelerate the implementation of advanced material and equipment solutions for flexible packaging by working with global value chain partners who share our mindset to reduce, reuse and recycle as we contribute to a circular plastics economy.”

Extensive trials with SABIC LLDPE BX202 resin on a pilot film manufacturing line at JSW’s Extrusion Technology Center in Hiroshima have demonstrated the excellent performance of the material. As a result, this TF-BOPE grade is currently considered the best-in-class to run on existing tenter frame film lines for BOPE as well as on slightly modified equipment for biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP). Toshiyuki Ninomiya, Vice Plant Manager, Hiroshima Plant for JSW explained, “After testing SABIC’s LLDPE BX202 material in our Bi-Axial Film Stretching pilot line, we were positively surprised by the performance of it. Its excellent processability combined with good mechanical properties makes this material a great addition to our recommendable materials portfolio for our customers and strengthen our position in the BOPE market. By collaborating with SABIC for use of their overall high-performance TF-BOPE resin on our advanced film extrusion lines, we are actively promoting the broader implementation of more efficient and sustainable, circular ‘mono-materialized’ film solutions designed for recycling.”

SABIC’s LLDPE BX202 material combines outstanding processability with good mechanical and optical properties, including clear transparency and twice the impact strength, puncture resistance, tensile strength and stiffness compared to conventional blown PE film of equal thickness. This means that SABIC’s material offers significant potential for further down-gauging and corresponding reductions in weight, material consumption and carbon emissions. At potential packaging material reductions of up to 50 percent vs. incumbent blown PE film, this also translates into potentially higher line speeds with shorter cooling times, maximizing the productivity of applications.

Furthermore, the mono-PE material enhances the recyclability of final flexible packaging applications at the end of their lifespan without compromising the integrity of the packaged products such as frozen food, fruit and vegetable packaging applications. SABIC’s TF-BOPE polymer is also available in certified circular as well as certified renewable grades from Trucircle portfolio.

BIC LLDPE BX202, a specialized linear low-density polyethylene resin for processing on tenter frame extrusion lines for biaxially oriented polyethylene (TF-BOPE) packaging film, combines significant down-gauging potential with outstanding optical and mechanical properties. In food packaging applications, for instance, the TF-BOPE grade delivers clear transparency, lower haze and high gloss together with twice the impact strength, puncture resistance, tensile strength and stiffness compared to conventional blown PE film of equal thickness.

Mondi and Reckitt Launch Paper-Based Packaging for Finish Dishwasher Tabs With 75% Less Plastic

Mondi and Reckitt Launch Paper-Based Packaging for Finish Dishwasher Tabs With 75% Less Plastic

  • Mondi and Reckitt created an innovative paper-based packaging solution for Finish dishwasher tablets
  • New packaging reduces plastic by 75% and will eliminate more than 2,000 tonnes of plastic each year once roll-out is complete
  • Move contributes to Reckitt’s ambition to halve the amount of virgin plastic in its packaging by 2030

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has helped Reckitt on its sustainability journey by designing new paper-based packaging for the company’s market-leading Finish dishwasher tablets.

Packaging for dishwasher tablets must be sealable, durable and water resistant, so using paper has traditionally been challenging. However, by working closely together along Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach, Mondi and Reckitt were able to create a solution that is sustainable by design: the new Finish packaging has successfully replaced 75% of the plastic with responsibly sourced paper. The remaining plastic is used to strengthen the paper structure and provide barrier protection to ensure the quality and safety of the Finish product as well as a re-closable seal.

The new paper-based packaging for Finish will initially launch exclusively with Carrefour in France, where the packaging is recyclable in the existing paper recycling streams. Any adaptations required following the initial market launch will be incorporated before its roll out in other countries over the next few years. Once the launch is complete, Reckitt will be eliminating more than 2,000 tonnes of plastic every year – which is the equivalent of 50 million 1-litre bottles.

Angela Naef, Chief Research & Development Officer at Reckitt said: “Removing plastic from our products is a priority across all Reckitt’s brands. We are always looking at new and innovative ways to improve sustainability in our packaging and we are committed to pioneering further packaging innovation. One of Reckitt’s sustainability ambitions is to reduce virgin plastic in our packaging by half by 2030. As well as removing plastic, the new packaging is expected to generate 15% less CO2 emissions across the product’s lifecycle compared to the previous plastic packaging.”

Gonzalo Balcazar, Global Category Vice President at Finish added: “This latest design represents our commitment to build better future solutions, not just for cleaner dishes but for a cleaner, more sustainable world. The paper-based solution ensures that Finish customers can enjoy the same product they know and love, with the added benefit of doing something for the environment.”

Olivier Seux, Head of Global Key Accounts at Mondi said: “With Reckitt, we were able to develop a paper-based packaging solution that reduces plastic usage while still providing the necessary product protection. This project is a great example of Mondi’s approach of using paper where possible, plastic when useful. The packaging has been designed with sustainability in mind to minimise the impact on the environment. We look forward to working with Reckitt to continue to test and develop solutions that help them achieve their sustainability goals.”

Totalenergies, Windmöller & Hölscher and Mitsubishi Chemical Group’s Collaboration Led to High Barrier Recyclable Packaging Contributing to Materials Circularity

Totalenergies, Windmöller & Hölscher and Mitsubishi Chemical Group’s Collaboration Led to High Barrier Recyclable Packaging Contributing to Materials Circularity

TotalEnergies, Windmöller & Hölscher and Mitsubishi Chemical Group announce today the successful proof of concept of a fully recyclable High Barrier Stand-up Pouch suitable for food-grade applications.

The partners have developed a fully recyclable high barrier packaging, to replace multimaterial structures (like e.g., metalized BoPP/PE or metallized BoPET/PE), in line with brand owners’ commitments to 100% recyclable packaging by 2025. Composed of 98% polyethylene and less than 2% EVOH, required for barrier properties, the new solution exhibits identical performances without any compromise on recyclability, allowing to enter available recycling streams and thus contributing to address the challenge of plastics end-of-life.

It consists of a Machine Direction Orientation (MDO) film and a sealing film, laminated together by Dettmer Verpackungen GmbH & Co. KG. The machine manufacturer B&B Verpackungstechnik GmbH then transformed this structure into a Stand-Up Pouch that could be used for demanding applications, such as coffee packaging. The MDO-PE film recipe, composed of TotalEnergies Supertough, and unique Lumicene high density PE together with Mitsubishi Chemical Group’s Soarnol, was running on an VarexII equipment at the Windmöller & Hölscher Expo for four days during the 2022 K show and was successfully welcomed by attendees.

“The replacement of non-recyclable multi-material packaging is key to ensure the circularity of plastic materials, bringing more qualitative items on the market to be used as feedstock for the recycling industry. We are committed to accelerate in the circular economy by integrating eco-design principles into our product development process, in line with our ambition of producing 30% recycled and bio polymers by 2030” said Olivier Greiner, Vice President, Polymers Europe & Orient at TotalEnergies.

“With this product study, we are very pleased to showcase another missing piece in the puzzle towards a true circular economy. Our leading knowledge and cutting-edge technology for the production of barrier and MDO-PE films as well as the excellent co-operation between all partners have made this possible.” said Dr. Jonas Schmidt, Head of Product Management of Windmöller & Hölscher.

“We are happy to participate in this joint project, offering an innovative and sustainable packaging to the industry. Thanks to the combination of chosen barrier materials, together with excellent machine technology, the needs of high water-vapor-, oxygen- and aroma-barrier are achieved. Furthermore, the structure can be declared by definition as mono-layer solution, and it is also fully mechanically recyclable”, explained Domenico De Angelis, General Manager Sales Soarnol, P&C MMA Business Group EMEA of Mitsubishi Chemical Group.
