INEOS Styrolution Collaborates Successfully With Arburg on Sustainable Solutions

INEOS Styrolution Collaborates Successfully With Arburg on Sustainable Solutions

INEOS Styrolution, the global leader in styrenics, has announced today that they are working together with Arburg, a leading global manufacturer of plastic processing machines, to combine innovative sustainable injection moulding machines with the world’s broadest sustainable styrenics polymer portfolio. Demonstrations will be done at Arburg’s Anniversary Days 2023 (March 8-11 in Lossburg) and at FAKUMA 2023 (October, 17-21 in Friedrichshafen).

  • First sustainable INEOS Styrolution’s ECO grades successfully tested by Arburg on their latest generation of injection moulding machines include Terluran ECO as well as NAS ECO.

Arburg’s new anniversary machine ALLROUNDER 470 H

Two hybrid Allrounder 470 H machines set the stage for new machine technology at the first anniversary event in February 2023. The machines in the “Comfort” and “Premium” performance variants are particularly energy-saving, resource- and production-efficient, user-friendly and reliable! Compared to a hydraulic machine, the new Allrounder 470 H boasts an energy footprint that is up to 50% better and can save up to 12,000 kg of CO2 per year. The hybrid machine incorporates many technical innovations that are only available from Arburg. A new oil management concept, for example, reduces the oil requirement by around 35%. Flow rate splitting enables simultaneous movements of hydraulic auxiliary axes. The dry cycle time is also reduced by about one third. The Arburg servo-hydraulic system (ASH) permits particularly energy-efficient and low-emission operation.

INEOS Styrolution’s styrenics ECO portfolio

The company’s ECO portfolio ranges from Styrolution PS ECO across a range of ABS1 , ASA2,SAN3 and SMMA4 grades to SBC5 ECO solutions.

The Terluran ECO sustainable product portfolio includes both mechanically-recycled and bio-attributed alternatives to conventional ABS. Mechanically-recycled grades contain up to 70% post-consumer recycled content. The bio-attributed grades (ISCC-certified) range all the way to a complete bio-attributed solution (Terluran ECO B100) with bio-attributed content from all three monomers (styrene monomer, butadiene and acrylonitrile), which leads to a negative product carbon footprint for the B100 version.

NAS ECO is an ISCC-certified bio-attributed SMMA material, popular for its excellent transparency, an extremely low haze and good thermal and chemical resistance. The material provides a carbon footprint reduction of up to 99%. Like its conventional equivalent NAS, it is also suitable for food packaging solutions.

Most importantly, all ECO products perform on the same level as their respective conventional counterparts.

Christian Homp, Team Manager Applications at Arburg, says: “The combination of our injection moulding machines with INEOS Styrolution’s ECO material must be a convincing argument for all customers who want to improve their CO2 footprint.”

Christian Dietlein, Technical Account Manager at INEOS Styrolution, adds: “First of all, we wish Arburg all the best on their 100th birthday! We are excited to work with a company that has similar strong objectives related to sustainability as INEOS Styrolution.”

Airnov Demonstrates Sustainability Credentials With ISCC PLUS Certification at Its Romorantin Plant

Airnov Demonstrates Sustainability Credentials With ISCC PLUS Certification at Its Romorantin Plant

  • International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification is an important step towards the circular economy
  • Availability of renewable feedstock at Romorantin facility helped it to receive certification in October 2022
  • Development of more circular products is a key strategic priority for Airnov and forms a critical component of its ESG commitments

Airnov Healthcare Packaging, a global leader in controlled atmosphere packaging, has announced a key breakthrough in its sustainability journey after its plant in Romorantin, France, obtained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification.

As one of the world’s most recognizable sustainability certification schemes, ISCC’s mission is to support the shift towards a more circular economy. The ISCC PLUS certificate guarantees that end-products contribute to this approach by using renewable feedstock.

The certification also provides a guarantee to customers on traceability. Thanks to Airnov’s ISCC mass balance approach, bio-circular feedstock can be mixed with virgin materials in a certifiable process that is fully traceable and credible.

“Achieving ISCC PLUS underlines Airnov’s commitment to providing responsible and sustainable solutions for our customers,” commented Yann Magis, Romorantin Site Manager at Airnov. “We constantly strive to create processes that add value to products, improve customer and employee experiences, and reduce our impact on the environment.”

“That means introducing more circularity into the way we work – our site at Romorantin is a flagship example of how this can be enacted and will serve to inspire further developments in the future.”

Crucially, the incorporation of renewable feedstock does not alter performance metrics, the products maintaining the same technical specifications and regulatory compliance. These include a series of standard products, including capsules, tubes and stoppers, all of which can be produced under the ISCC certification.

Customers will be able to contact Airnov to verify whether the product they are interested in purchasing is ISCC certified.

“What we are seeing is a trend towards customers demanding solutions that help them to reduce their carbon footprints,” added Mélissa Plantier, Product Manager at Airnov. “They want to be more responsible in their manufacturing processes, and some are looking to become carbon neutral in the not-too-distant future.”

“This naturally leads to more customers asking Airnov about how we manage our company, because they want more responsible partners in their supply chains.”

Indeed, the ISCC PLUS certification is the latest in a series of recent sustainability initiatives completed by the company, which continues to develop and enact a range of actions to reduce its environmental footprint. These include measuring carbon footprints, as well as various energy and waste reduction schemes.

STADLER: The Secret of Accurate Commissioning and Timely Project Delivery

STADLER: The Secret of Accurate Commissioning and Timely Project Delivery

The pursuit of a circular economy to address the global waste issue is driving a growth of the recycling industry and an increasing complexity in its demands. Environmental services providers and waste management companies need sorting facilities capable of processing the high volumes required efficiently while produce outputs of the high quality needed for recycling. When planning the construction of a new plant or upgrade of an existing one to meet these requirements, selecting the company for designing and building it is a critical business decision.

The importance of timely commissioning

A key factor in the selection is the company’s ability to work to the agreed schedule and complete commissioning on time.

“The material sorted at our facility is connected to contracts with fixed starting points,” explains Tristan Merk, Project Manager at environmental services provider PreZero Recycling. “Due to this fact, it is very important that the scheduled milestones will be reached. If the construction or the commissioning period isn’t on time, we risk problems with our customer or losing the contract.” David Aguado Teruel, Technical Director at GRIÑO Group in Spain agrees: late delivery on the project would have “a very negative effect, because the delay has a direct impact on the viability of our business plan and commitments, and our ability to deliver our services to our customers and public administrations.”

STADLER is well aware of the critical importance of timely commissioning, as Carlos Manchado Atienza, International Sales Director at STADLER explains: “The implications of a delay for our customer are serious: we are talking about losses in the thousands of Euros for non-recovered material and fixed costs already contracted – and this is without taking into consideration landfill costs.” Ventura Montes, Catalonia Waste Treatment Plants Manager at PreZero Spain, adds: “For a packaging plant, we could face monthly costs of some 350,000 Euro for alternative waste treatment arrangements and around 400,000 Euro in lost opportunities. For a larger facility, such as an urban waste treatment center, it could be some 350,000 Euro a month in fixed costs plus around 2 Million Euro in lost sales.”

“That’s why we study the schedule of our work very seriously,” says Carlos Manchado Atienza. “STADLER is recognized not only for the quality of our products and our expertise, but also for our seriousness in the start-up and punctuality in project delivery.” Ventura Montes agrees: “One of STADLER’s strengths is that not only do they always deliver on the agreed date, but usually they are even a few days early. Every time we contracted STADLER for the construction or upgrade of plants, commissioning has always been on time and very few adjustments were required after installation.”

STADLER’s secret to smooth and timely commissioning

Careful planning based on STADLER’s experience is a key factor in its ability to consistently deliver on time. “First of all, we only provide delivery dates we know we can achieve,” says Benjamin Eule, Director, STADLER UK and Head of Commissioning. “The final delivery is not only the timely installation, but also the commissioning of the facility to go into production. We work with realistic time schedules, and we allow sufficient time for each stage.”

STADLER’s in-house capabilities are also an important factor, as Benjamin Eule explains: “As we have in-house teams for mechanical installation and electrical planning, installation and Process Control Programming, we can control and manage the delivery schedules. We also have quicker internal communication and greater flexibility to adjust the work requirements across multiple projects.” Carlos Manchado Atienza adds: “All the preparation work in detailed and construction engineering helps us in manufacturing and gives us an advantage when preparing the assembly.

The clear roles and effective collaboration of the local and Head Office teams are crucial, as Carlos Manchado Atienza states: “Coordination and planning between the different departments are key. The good work of the sales teams with the basic engineering, followed by the Head Office’s work in detailed and construction engineering give us a competitive advantage. The professionalism of everyone involved and knowing our teams well – from sales and project management to production and assembly – gives us the security to trust the deadlines we have set.”

Ricardo Micó, STADLER Assembly Manager Spain, agrees: “For us, respecting the project milestones is key, as well as the effective coordination of all STADLER departments to meet our clients’ needs. This gives us unmatched strength in working with our clients’ full confidence.”

A reputation for quality work and timely commissioning

Environmental services provider PreZero has contracted STADLER on several projects, turning to the company again and again for its reliability: “There are always challenges and unforeseen events; STADLER adapts and is flexible; if necessary, their assembly team will work weekends, holidays, nights – on occasion they have even doubled resources to deliver on the agreed day,” says Ventura Montes. “If it’s a large-scale project or an upgrade is expected to be difficult, we always try to work with STADLER.”

STADLER recently designed and built the sorting and recycling plant in Almonacid del Marquesado, Spain, for GRIÑO Group. “The project coincided with the final stages of the coronavirus pandemic, so it was necessary to manage very well the resources and materials needed for the assembly,” concludes David Aguado Teruel. “In my experience, STADLER is a company that has demonstrated in its projects its commitment to meeting deadlines and milestones. I would recommend STADLER for the construction, installation and commissioning of waste treatment plants.”

Educational Partnership Extended: Wesel Elementary School Children Will Continue to Benefit From the Sponsorship Project Even After Its Tenth Year

Educational Partnership Extended: Wesel Elementary School Children Will Continue to Benefit From the Sponsorship Project Even After Its Tenth Year

  • “Educational Coaching” extended for another three years
  • 62 children have already benefited from individual support
  • Generational change for mentors started

The “Education Coaching” project is starting its anniversary year with new momentum. With the start of the initiative’s tenth year, the partners have decided on an extension. Ulrike Westkamp, mayor of the city of Wesel, Martin Babilas, CEO of ALTANA AG, Astrid Wahl-Weber, head of Wesel’s (GGS) Innenstadt community elementary school, and Astrid Vogell, deputy director of the Klausenhof Academy, signed an agreement on Tuesday to continue the “Educational Coaching” project through 2025. As a result, Wesel elementary school students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds will benefit from individual support from volunteer mentors for at least three more years.

ALTANA finances a socio-educational expert from the Klausenhof Academy, who recruits and supports mentors at GGS Innenstadt elementary school and coordinates their voluntary work. “We are active worldwide, but we have special ties to our hometown of Wesel. Together we want to support disadvantaged children and thus make a contribution to equal opportunity,” says Martin Babilas, CEO of ALTANA AG. “We would like to express our sincere thanks for the commitment of everyone involved, especially the volunteer mentors, and wish the project continued success going forward.”

The focus of the project is on promoting the personal development of elementary school children from second grade onward. The decisive success factor is undivided attention for the child. Project manager Hildegard Derksen from the Klausenhof Academy has found that children and volunteers alike enjoy the project: “We have observed that in the course of the mentoring, the children gain more and more self-confidence and self-esteem and like the exchange. And the children’s smiles are extra motivation for the mentors.”

Successful educational partnership

The project is currently undergoing a generational change. Five new mentors recently joined the initiative. At the same time, five long-time volunteers have left. Some of the current 13 female mentors and 2 male mentors are now taking care of two children. Since the project began, 62 kinds have benefited from the intensive support provided by their mentors. According to Astrid Wahl-Weber, head of GGS Innenstadt, the demand has continued to grow in recent years: “The project has become an important part of everyday school life. Thanks to the good cooperation, we’ve been able to help many elementary school children so far. However, we’ve also observed that due to the restrictions resulting from the coronavirus pandemic and the current increased cost of living, the need continues to grow.” The commitment of the volunteer mentors is crucial for providing even more children with equal opportunity.

Mayor Ulrike Westkamp, who initiated the successful model, said: “The project is a definite role model in the city of Wesel. I am very happy about the voluntary commitment of the people, some of whom have been involved in the project for many years, to create perspectives for elementary school children. Anyone who enjoys supporting young people is very welcome.” The mentors not only receive training, qualification measures, and further training, but also meet regularly to talk to one another about their experiences.
