Mesamoll Plasticizer From LANXESS Now Even More Sustainable

Mesamoll Plasticizer From LANXESS Now Even More Sustainable

  • Significantly reduced carbon footprint
  • No impact on product quality or performance
  • Distribution of more sustainable version starts in October, 2023

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has reached an important step towards more sustainability in its plasticizer portfolio: The Polymer Additives (PLA) business unit now offers a more sustainable solution for its plasticizer Mesamoll. The phthalate-free, well-gelling and exceptionally saponification-resistant plasticizer can be applied for a wide range of polymers, such as PVC, PUR and rubber.

“The switch to a more sustainable raw material base in the production of Mesamoll is a testament to LANXESS’s commitment to sustainability,” says Karsten Job, Head of the Polymer Additives business. “Helping our customers to reduce their carbon footprint while meeting the demands of our customers for phthalate-free, reliable, and performing solutions makes us a frontrunner in the market.”

In the future, more than 30 percent of the input materials for Mesamoll will come from fully sustainable sources resulting in a reduction in the product carbon footprint (PCF) of around 20 percent. As this is calculated via the mass balance approach by the supplier of the respective raw materials, there is no impact on the product quality or performance of Mesamoll.

“We want to actively shape the transformation of our industry,” says Stefan Tiebach, Head of Global Marketing at PLA. “At LANXESS, we firmly believe in leading by example and that is why we decided to stop the distribution of our conventional Mesamoll and are solely distributing the more sustainable version starting on October 1, 2023. Our customers will continue to receive the usual product quality with the additional benefit of an improved sustainability profile.”

LANXESS is committed to further reduce the PCF for its plasticizer Mesamoll in the future, even though the current, reduced PCF is significantly lower than most alternative plasticizers on the market.

Fakuma 2023: Reduction of the Cycle Time on the BOY XS E by Means of the Igus Sprue Separator

Fakuma 2023: Reduction of the Cycle Time on the BOY XS E by Means of the Igus Sprue Separator

Efficient processes and short lead times are becoming increasingly important in the course of Industry 4.0 and the same applies to the injection moulding production. But removing sprues often means the loss of valuable time. With increasing automation, sprue pickers are often used to remove the sprue directly from the injection mould by gripping pliers. But this process step also costs cycle time – about 1.25 seconds each time, since the new cycle can only start once the picker has moved out of the mould area. In order to further advance automation and increase productivity, the Cologne-based plastics specialist igus has developed a compact sprue separator suitable for BOY XS and BOY XS E injection moulding machines. With this automation solution, articles and sprues are separated from each other directly at the machine – without extending the cycle time.

The sprue separator is positioned under the ejection chute. From there, the injection-moulded parts fall onto a separator which is a rotating disc.

An integrated camera detects the sprues on the separator and a gantry robot picks them up with a gripper. If the sprue and the article still have to be separated from each other, the article is separated by a device and falls into a box, while the sprues are ejected separately. Meanwhile, the injection moulding machines can continue production without any restrictions.

All components of the sprue separator are available on the robotics-marketplace RBTX powered by igus.

New Asme Standard Helps Define Superiority of Linear Motion Systems From Alio Industries

New Asme Standard Helps Define Superiority of Linear Motion Systems From Alio Industries

ALIO Industries — leading nanometer-level motion control system innovator — is well known for having developed mechanical bearing linear motion systems that can perform at levels that alternative “air” bearing stages struggle to attain. This is down to the company’s focus on 6-D Nano Precision.

The newly published standard developed by the AMSE (B5.64 standard “Methods for the Performance Evaluation of Single Axis Linear Positioning Systems) seems to finally accept that to accurately characterize the repeatability of such high-end motion systems, a systematic process must be used to characterize the point repeatability of a stage along the entire axis, something ALIO has been advocating for over a decade.

Precision linear motion systems provide highly accurate linear motion along x, y or z axes. They typically consist of a linear guide rail, a carriage or slider, and a drive system. The guide rail provides support and guidance for the carriage, while the drive system creates the force necessary to move the carriage along the rail.

By adding precision ingredients like high resolution encoders, state-of-the-art machining, nano-precise metrology and tuning procedures, these systems can be used in a variety of applications where high accuracy and smooth operation are required, such as in semiconductor manufacturing, precision machining, and optical inspection.

Bill Hennessey, President of ALIO Industries says, “Because of the exacting nature of the applications where linear motion systems are used, it is vital that they can achieve ultra-high levels of repeatable accuracy. This is why ALIO’s linear motion products have been designed and manufactured to have no equal in terms of performance and reliability. The ‘6-D’ in 6-D Nano Precision refers to the 6 dimensions of motion; linear, straightness, flatness, pitch, yaw and roll. Nano Precision refers to documented proof of performance at or below the +/- 450 nm level. 6-D Nano Precision means the documented proof of performance over all 6 degrees of freedom of a body in motion at the nanometer level of precision. We are delighted that the new ASME standard recognises the importance of this approach, and it helps differentiate our linear motion systems from those designed and built to the 2-D world of planar repeatability and accuracy.”

All motion systems operate in 3-dimensional space and have errors in 6 degrees of freedom (6-DOF). However, motion systems are often only characterized by performance data of a single or subset of these 6-DOF. This practice leaves several error sources unaccounted for in performance data and specifications. ALIO contends that repeatability performance for metrology inspection and manufacturing systems must be analyzed and specified using a “point repeatability” method that accounts for 6D spatial errors in order to provide true representation of nanometer-precision performance. The ASME B5.64 standard for motion metrology shows that today standards organisations also see its importance.

Hennessey concludes, “The increasing precision of linear motion systems in particular and all motion systems in general requires a new language which transcends the use of terms like ‘precision’ and ‘resolution’ without any degree of qualification. ALIO’s use of Point Precision and 6-D Nano Precision, and now the newly published ASME standard, redefine the way precision motion systems are measured. All such initiatives or activities in this area are ultimately of enormous benefit for end-users who should be able to specify solutions that can truly achieve what they need in respect of precision and repeatability. ALIO does not build legacy products and is acutely aware of the 6-dimensional errors associated with simple linear motion. As such, we design and manufacture our linear motion stages with these issues in sharp focus with unique manufacturing techniques and leading-edge components tested to NIST traceable nano results.”

All of ALIO’s linear stage product families exhibit world class performance, component choice being dictated by the demands of exacting applications and cost sensitivity.

SABIC’S STAMAX 30YH570 Resin is First Polymer to Earn a UL Verified Mark for Thermal Runaway Protection of EV Battery Systems

SABIC’S STAMAX 30YH570 Resin is First Polymer to Earn a UL Verified Mark for Thermal Runaway Protection of EV Battery Systems

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, today announced that its STAMAX 30YH570 resin has earned the UL Verified Mark from Underwriters Laboratories. This 30 percent glass fiber-reinforced copolymer resin, a featured product offered under the company’s BLUEHERO electrification initiative, is the first polymer used in electric vehicle (EV) battery systems to receive UL Verification for marketing claims of thermal and mechanical performance. UL Verification, based on an objective, scientific assessment by a respected third party, can give customers high confidence in the flame delay performance of this product.

The vast majority of EV batteries perform without issues throughout their useful life. Although thermal runaway incidents are extremely infrequent, the safety-conscious automotive industry is highly focused on ensuring that the design and performance of EV battery systems prolong the time available to exit a vehicle by delaying the propagation of a fire beyond the battery pack for as long as possible. A key consideration is the proper selection and deployment of fire protection materials used for battery pack components, including enclosures and covers, trays, thermal barriers that separate cells into groups, etc.

According to Venkatakrishnan Umamaheswaran (UV), SABIC’s global Automotive Marketing director: “UL Verification for the thermal runaway protection of STAMAX 30YH570 resin is a significant milestone in our development of polymer materials for today’s rapidly evolving EV battery systems. This recognition not only underscores the exceptional performance and safety features of our polymer, but also reinforces the importance of our BLUEHERO initiative. By providing cost-effective, lightweight plastic solutions, SABIC is helping to advance EV technology.”

Thermal runaway box testing according to UL 2596, Test Method for Thermal and Mechanical Performance of Battery Enclosure Materials, demonstrated that STAMAX 30YH570 resin withstood an internal box pressure of 250 kPa and an internal box temperature of 420°C. Results were based on three replicate tests, with a panel thickness of 4mm. The SABIC material features an intumescent capability that helps with fire suppression. Its other key properties include high stiffness and strength and easy processing.

This UL Verification serves as further validation of SABIC’s continued progress under its BLUEHERO initiative in demonstrating the performance advantages of thermoplastics over outdated steel and other metals for battery packs. These benefits include weight and cost reduction, increased functional integration, and enhanced electrical and thermal insulation.

Hot Runner Systems With a Plus in Terms of Sustainability

Hot Runner Systems With a Plus in Terms of Sustainability

At Fakuma 2023, which will take place from 17 to 21 October in Friedrichshafen/Germany, Oerlikon HRSflow, Stand A1-1215 in Hall 1, will be focusing on hot runner systems that enable greater sustainability and efficiency in thermoplastic injection moulding. In addition to future-oriented automotive applications, the focus will be on trendsetting technologies and projects in packaging industry. System-typical advantages include short cycle times, fast colour changes, high production volumes, high moulded part quality and a very good suitability also for sustainable polymers.

Stack mould for thin-walled packaging

A new stack mould, which has been developed for time, material and energy-saving injection moulding of thin-walled, ecologically optimised packaging, could become a visitor magnet. The new patent-pending solution, soon available on the market, is equipped with nozzles of the new Xd series from Oerlikon HRSflow and thus enables high filling pressures for cost-efficient production with continuously high quality. The stack principle supports the use of smaller injection moulding machines. Thanks to a plug-and-play installation, assembly and maintenance are simplified and highly efficient, avoiding long and costly downtime. The new solution is also suitable for processing PCR plastics and sustainable compounds in line with the requirements of the circular economy. The demo tool with the stack mould system is available for customers to try the most challenging polymers for thin-wall packaging applications. Also available at Oerlikon HRSflow’s Test Lab is the ENGEL e-Speed 280 IMM-Hybrid solution to manage mainly R-PET, bio-based and compostable polymers, in line with the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Multi-cavity system for caps & closures

The expertise and knowhow of Oerlikon HRSflow in the field of caps & closures will be highlighted through the display of the multi-cavity system designed for the simultaneous high productivity production of 72 caps. Thanks to the new Vf nozzle series from Oerlikon HRSflow, it enables very short cycle times of 2.2 to 3.5 seconds while at the same time ensuring maximum process reliability thanks to excellent control and optimum balancing of the filling process. This technical solution, which is equally suitable for carbonated and non-carbonated beverages as well as for liquid and powdered concentrates, meets all the requirements of the new European single-use plastic directive, which makes tethered closures mandatory for all beverage containers up to three litres in capacity.

Specially developed for HDPE caps & closures, the Vf nozzles of the new multicavity line from Oerlikon HRSflow are suitable for part weights from 0.5 g to 8 g. In any case, they stand for reliably consistent product qualities, fast colour changes and system restarts. A special nozzle tip enables optimum control in the gate area and improves cycle time. The separate replaceability of the nozzle tip makes maintenance particularly fast and cost-effective. Rheologically optimized hot runner geometries ensure significantly increased reactivity and thus effectiveness of the system. Special inserts minimize the time required for colour changes while keeping reject rates low, which contributes to the sustainability of production even with particularly critical colours.

FLEXflow for demanding injection moulding tasks

In addition to the aforementioned hot runner solutions tailored to the production of packaging, the FLEXflow technology from Oerlikon HRSflow will be presented at Fakuma 2023 as a sought-after solution for demanding injection moulding tasks. The servo-driven valve gate system is combined with a flexibly programmable control unit. This configuration enables precise and independent adjustment of the stroke and force of the needle position of each individual nozzle during the opening and closing phases of cascading injection processes. Its possibilities are demonstrated by future trends such as back injection of foils, intelligent automotive surfaces and lighting applications. Especially their use in family moulds enables significant cost savings compared to separate injection of the individual parts, even if they are produced in very different sized cavities.
