Solvay Partners with French Start-Up Ostium in Single-Use Surgical Instruments Material Recycling

Solvay Partners with French Start-Up Ostium in Single-Use Surgical Instruments Material Recycling

Value chain collaboration aims to foster a circular ecosystem and reduce the carbon footprint of single-use surgical instruments molded in Ixef PARA

Solvay, a leading supplier of advanced materials, has teamed up with French start-up Ostium in a joint project designed to enable the mechanical recycling of end-of-life single-use surgical instruments molded in glass-fiber reinforced Ixef polyarylamide (PARA) from Solvay’s portfolio of specialty polymers.

The initiative is the first for valuable polymers to be recycled and upcycled from used healthcare devices, proving that the medical safety provided by high-performance polymers such as Solvay’s Ixef PARA in single-use surgical instruments, can be reconciled with the need for greater sustainability and resource efficiency.

“Our customers in the healthcare industry must meet strict regulatory demands, while at the same time striving to minimize the carbon footprint of their products and support the reduction of hospitals and clinics’ end-of-life waste,” says Claire Guerrero, Global Marketing Manager Sustainability at Solvay. “We identified a gap between these challenges, which prompted us to forge this unique collaboration for developing a breakthrough recycling process for used surgical instruments that are commonly disposed of by incineration rather than reclaiming their high material value. By controlling every step in the loop from the original Ixef PARA to the upcycled PARA compound, we will be able to ensure its high quality, purity, and performance for demanding downstream applications and can make a significant contribution to a more sustainable polymer economy.”

Ostium Group, a French start-up specializing in the design and manufacture of instruments for hip, knee, shoulder, and trauma orthopedic surgery, will supply hospitals with new custom surgical kits made with Ixef PARA and collect the contaminated instruments after use. This will also promote the replacement of metal surgical instruments with lightweight polymer designs and help medical facilities reduce their time and cost for sterilization, and disposal as well as lower their carbon footprint.

The partnership with a regionally recognized leader in the treatment and recycling of waste from healthcare activities with infectious risks, was key to developing a dedicated mechanical process to clean, sort, and grind the collected material, delivering high-quality polymer feedstock that can be used in the production of new polymers. In this way, end-of-life surgical instruments can become part of a circular ecosystem that prevents the loss of valuable material and reduces the consumption of fossil resources.

Finally, Solvay is evaluating upcycling options and how to integrate back this recycled feedstock into new high-performance PARA compounds. Initial trials have shown that the recycle-based PARA compound provides a very high level of performance, with up to 85% of flexural properties and no loss in excellent surface appearance when compared with the virgin grade, with the additional advantage of a lower carbon footprint.

Solvay Partners with French Start-Up Ostium in Single-Use Surgical Instruments Material Recycling.

In view of regulations in place in the healthcare market with constraints on the use of recycled materials, Solvay is targeting open-loop downstream solutions in which the recycled material will find a second life in high-end markets such as automotive and sports and leisure equipment.

“Design4Circularity” wins 2022 Sustainable Packaging Award

“Design4Circularity” wins 2022 Sustainable Packaging Award

  • Collaboration by Beiersdorf, Borealis, Clariant & Siegwerk wins Ecovia Intelligence’s Sustainable Beauty Award 2022 packaging category
  • Giving packaging waste a second life in Personal Care applications
  • Designed to be recycled again and again: colorless bottle with 100% Post-Consumer
  • recyclate content (PCR), equipped with a printed deinkable full-body shrink sleeve
  • Full sortability in current recycling infrastructures possible

Personal Care packaging concept “Design4Circularity” is the recipient of this year’s Sustainable Packaging Award, announced at the 2022 Sustainable Beauty Awards ceremony on November 7.

Resulting from a unique value chain collaboration between Beiersdorf, Borealis, Siegwerk, and Clariant, the concept centers on giving packaging waste a second life in Personal Care applications suitable for multiloop recycling.

“Packaging made from recycled plastic is playing an increasingly important role in cosmetic products. But for us and our peers to push on and achieve the target of viable, fully circular solutions, it is vital to consider the entire lifecycle when creating a new design. This includes polymer production, polymer additivation, printing and design, alongside sorting and recycling. By bringing the expertise of all four partners to the table, the team has successfully created a blueprint for the rest of the industry that enables fast adoption and scale up. We’re honored to have its potential recognized with the Sustainable Packaging Award,” comments Stefan Rüster, a Packaging Sustainabillity Expert at Beiersdorf on behalf of the collaboration team.

The award-winning packaging consists of an uncolored HDPE (or PET) bottle made from 100% recycled polymers, with a fullbody sleeve printed with de-inkable inks which deliver the superior aesthetic quality demanded for Personal Care. Full details of the partners’ individual contributions are available here.

Borealis brought its expertise in advanced, transformational mechanical recycling technology by offering high quality PCR based on proprietary Borcycle™ M technology. Additionally, Clariant brought expertise in designing additive solutions to ensure targeted stabilisation and high protection of PCR quality by preventing polymer-resin from degradation and by maintaining good performances at each recycling step.

Leading ink manufacturer Siegwerk was able to provide ink systems, which, in collaboration with Beiersdorf and a sleeve manufacturer, enabled printing of the sleeve to achieve a full body, colored and appealing cosmetic sleeve. The idea behind this being a modular system shifting the decoration to a sleeve and keeping the bottle transparent for better quality recyclate.

First sorting trials in existing recycling infrastructure proved the sortability of the full body sleeved HDPE bottle, achieving a high recovery of the bottle’s material. Additionally, the project team conducted trials with full body sleeved, transparent PET bottles and achieved similar results.

“We’re excited to be joining with the industry to pave the way towards more sustainable packaging and ultimately greater sustainability in beauty. We’re proud to bring progress through our additives that support PCR use in durable, recyclable packaging, as well as advancing products themselves via science-backed active ingredients and naturals for the cosmetic market with a positive sustainable and socioeconomic impact,” comments Bettina Siggelkow, Head of Sustainability Affairs, Clariant.

Covestro Initiates Green Logistics Pilot Program With Partners in China

Covestro Initiates Green Logistics Pilot Program With Partners in China

  • Collaborative efforts with a focus on truck transport
  • Program is key to the company’s reduction of scope 3 emissions
  • Supporting customers’ sustainability and climate-neutral targets

The reduction of indirect emissions from upstream and downstream processes is crucial to the quest of Covestro to achieve climate neutrality because these processes make up about 80 percent of the company’s total emissions. However, such CO2 emissions (scope 3 emissions) that can stem from supply chains, transport of materials or the processing of raw materials during production, are usually hard to track. In light of this, Covestro is launching a pilot green logistics program with partners in China as part of efforts to decarbonize the chemical supply chain.

According to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at Covestro’s booth at the China International Import Expo, the company will work with customers like Sherwin-Williams and Changzhou Changtu Chemical Co. Ltd, logistics solution and infrastructure partners such as Sinotrans Chemical International Logistics and Harbour New Energy Technology Shenzhen, as well as industry organizations such as Smart Freight Center China to devise new green logistics solutions to further reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the industry ecosystem.

Truck transport in focus

In the Asia-Pacific region, around 70 percent of Covestro’s goods are transported by truck, while in Europe and North America only around one-third is transported by road in each case, with inland waterways and railroads otherwise being used more frequently.

As such, the new partnership will focus on designing more sustainable means of road transportation by truck, and evaluate the viability of certain solutions under specific scenarios.

This includes the experiment of using electric trucks, which are prohibited for the road transport of dangerous goods under Chinese and European laws, for the short-distance shuttling of non-dangerous chemicals – free of limitations regarding the range. The team is also trying biodiesel, whose prices are subsidized in Shanghai, in long-haul transport of dangerous goods. Other solutions the program is looking at include hydrogen fuel cell-powered trucks. Some of the experiments will be adopted in real cases with cost and benefit estimation in the first half of 2023 under the partnership.

“The idea is to pilot, adopt and scale up low-emission fuels, vehicles and more sustainable logistics solutions with optimal costs and even financial benefits through an open platform,” says Samir Hifri, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain & Logistics Asia Pacific, Covestro. “We believe the supply chain could be an essential part for the chemical industry to achieve climate neutrality, and it’s crucial for us to find a balance between economics and emission reductions through such collaboration.”

Under the partnership, efforts will also be made to standardize calculations and reporting of GHG emissions. Through these efforts, Covestro and its partners hope to create a transparent and reliable certification mechanism that promotes green logistics as a widely applicable business model in the industry.

Jason You, Senior Supply Chain Director of Sherwin-Williams Asia, said: “Sherwin-Williams is committed to satisfying customer needs through quality products, excellent service and a highly trained and professional workforce and is constantly seeking ways to become more sustainable. We are excited to work with Covestro and other leading partners on this challenge. We look forward to continuing to innovate and introduce more sustainably advantaged product solutions to our customers in China and across the globe.”

Key to scope 3 emissions target

Earlier this year, Covestro announced that it is aiming to become operationally climate neutral – this includes reducing both direct emissions from its own operations (scope 1) as well as indirect emissions from purchased energy (scope 2) to net zero – by 2035. The company will be reporting its scope 3 emissions target next year.

“The MoU marks an essential step in Covestro’s planned announcement of the scope 3 emission target in 2023,” says Zhong Xiaobin, Senior Vice President of the Coatings and Adhesives segment of Covestro in Asia Pacific. “We expect to provide an integrated offering that combines more sustainable products and logistics services, thus supporting our customers to meet their sustainability and climate-neutrality targets and moving towards a circular economy.”
