Solvay Completes US Capacity Expansion to Meet Growing Demand for Copper in E-Mobility and Clean Energy

The 20-percent ACORGA product line capacity increase enhances Solvay’s leadership position in the mining industry

Solvay is celebrating the completion of its capacity expansion at the company’s Mount Pleasant, Tennessee facility (US), originally announced in December 2021. This milestone reaffirms Solvay’s commitment to the Mining industry and its efforts to respond to growing demand from mining operations for its ACORGA, ACORGA NR and ACORGA OPT copper solvent extraction (SX) products, driven by increasing demand for copper to support e-mobility and clean energy applications.

The Mount Pleasant facility manufactures solvent extraction reagents for mines producing copper through hydrometallurgical (SX-EW) processes. Even as oxide ore reserves are depleting, the market for copper solvent extractants is expected to remain strong, supported by new leaching technologies capable of treating sulfide ores.

“The Mount Pleasant expansion is a major achievement for our business, enabling Solvay to ensure security of supply for its customers while responding to their increasing production needs,” explains Matthew Davis, Global Business Director, Mineral Processing and Metal Extraction Products. “Solvay is committed to growing with its customers. In fact, we expect to add additional capacity in the future to remain a reliable, long-term partner and help our mining customers maximize metallurgical results and overall operational value.”

Solvay’s solvent extraction reagents complement its broad product portfolio for the mining industry. Combined with strong technical support, Solvay’s solutions help customers improve productivity and reduce operating costs while meeting complex metallurgical requirements and sustainability challenges, as mines strive to reduce freshwater use, energy use and reagent consumption.

Up to 70% energy savings with the DIEFFENBACHER TailoredPress

Up to 70% Energy Savings with the DIEFFENBACHER TailoredPress

Variable-speed pump drives minimize unnecessary energy consumption

The DIEFFENBACHER TailoredPress, the economical all-rounder for metal and composites forming, delivers DIEFFENBACHER expertise and experience for presses with press forces from 1,000 to 10,000 kN.

“In keeping with sustainable production, we paid particular attention to energy efficiency when developing the press series,” says Georg Obermaier, Head of the Forming Business Unit at DIEFFENBACHER. “That’s why DIEFFENBACHER presses use variable-speed pump drives, which ensure that plant operators save energy and operating costs.”

Typically, the energy for driving hydraulic presses is generated by a pump drive and made available for the forming process either directly or via an intermediate accumulator. Usually, electric motors with a constant speed are used, which continuously supply the oil even when pumps with a variable flow rate are used.

However, the press does not require maximum power full-time, explains Obermaier. “On the contrary, during pauses while loading and unloading and setup and maintenance, and even in many phases of the normal press cycle, the hydraulic drive system is often only in partial load operation or in ‘unpressurized circulation’. In other words, the drive pumps the hydraulic oil without actually using it. In addition, the entire system operates in an inefficient load range. Both operations consume an above-average amount of unnecessary energy.”

With the help of variable-speed pump drives, this unnecessary energy consumption can be minimized, as they are operated at dynamically adjustable speeds. The control is fully automatic. The operator sets forces, paths and parameters as usual, and the required speed is automatically calculated and set. In this way, the pump always operates in an optimal range and works efficiently. At a standstill, the press consumes virtually no energy.

“This power-on-demand concept can save up to 70% energy in metal forming applications with short cycle times,” says Obermaier, “and there are also significant savings in composites forming with comparatively long cycle times.” An additional benefit for operators: instead of the constant high noise level caused by a pump drive constantly running at maximum speed, the changing frequency of variable-speed pump drives is easier on the human ear.

For Obermaier, the advantages of the TailoredPress series are obvious: “With the highly attractive price-to-performance ratio, modern machine technology, low operating costs, reduced consumption of valuable resources and a better working environment thanks to lower noise emissions, we create real competitive advantages for our customers.”

Our unique proposals include the complete capsule-preform development service, which includes the development of the product as well as the technologies necessary to realise it. Alongside, there will be the complete range of bottling machines and plants

SACMI specialises in providing complete technologies for every stage of preform and cap production. This is SACMI’s calling card at Fispal 2023, the international food & beverage technology fair on the agenda in São Paulo, Brazil (São Paulo Expo) from 27 to 30 June.

A unique partner

SACMI is your one-stop solution to turn your product idea into a complete project: from concept to realisation, throughout the entire project life cycle.

Our SACMI Rigid Packaging Laboratory offers a full range of services related to the design of capsule-neck systems in accordance with the most advanced market standards as well as in order to maximise profitability and sustainability.

Winning technology

With its CCM (Continuous Compression Moulding) compression presses, SACMI leads the world market in plastic cap production.

For the production of PET preforms, SACMI has developed a complete range of IPS (Injection Preform System) injection moulding machines, installing more than 150 machines in less than 10 years in Brazil and Mexico alone.

There are many new products on the market that SACMI offers its customers visiting Fispal. These include advanced controls (dose insertion, mould thermoregulation, etc.) that facilitate machine operation, prevent errors, and increase durability as well as reliability over time.

CM-Flow, SACMI Smart Care

On its new-generation CCM presses, SACMI offers the new CM-Flow extruder, which allows increased output quality with reduced consumption and footprint.

CM-Flow has a screw diameter of just 35 mm, capable of delivering the same amount of molten material as a conventional 75 mm diameter extruder: 200 kg/hour. In addition, the Smart Care service, a continuous, in-depth, medium/long-term health check on machines, is available on the latest generation of CCMs. Utilising artificial intelligence algorithms for in-cloud data analysis, Smart Care aims to “quantify” the value of information, generating dedicated KPIs on relevant parameters for anticipating and predicting interventions required to maintain production in optimal conditions.

New IPS 300 + total quality control (PVS 156)

Expanded over the years, the range of IPS preform presses has recently been enriched with the IPS 300. This is a solution distinguished by high performance, great reliability and flexibility. IPS also offers the possibility – unique on the market – to integrate quality control directly into the machine.

Compared to a traditional manual control, with the PVS 156 system directly integrated in the press, sample control is fast, constant and accurate:

Fast, because it checks 96 preforms in less than 5 minutes
Constant, because the PVS does not suffer from the fatigue and approximation of manual control

Accurate, because in addition to providing a detailed inspection and measurement report, it relates these results to the number of mould cavities.

New neck-cap standard, tethered-friendly wide range solutions

SACMI leads the market toward new, more weight-optimised neck-capsule standards, which are recognised as suitable by leading international brand owners.

In addition, SACMI offers the market’s most comprehensive range of tethered-compatible solutions, along with post-processing band-cutting technologies that facilitate the retrofitting of existing production lines.

With the Power of the Sun to the Mobility of the Future

With the Power of the Sun to the Mobility of the Future

  • The Covestro Adelie was designed for the world’s toughest solar car race, the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge
  • Covestro supports project with innovative materials and as main sponsor
  • The overarching goal is the realization of the circular economy

In front of numerous guests and with great public attention, Team Sonnenwagen presented its new solar racing vehicle Covestro Adelie at the Eurogress Aachen, Germany. Over the course of one and a half years, the 50-member team of students from RWTH Aachen University and Aachen University of Applied Sciences created a new car model based on interdisciplinary research and extensive experience. This gives it a good chance of successfully participating in what is probably the world’s toughest solar car race – the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge from October 22-29, 2023 in Australia. Covestro shares the enthusiasm of the students and supports the team with innovative material solutions, technical exchange and as main sponsor.

“For me, the Sonnenwagen is a powerful symbol of future mobility, because it shows us that we need to ask crucial questions about materials science and design on the way there,” said Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer at Covestro, in her welcoming speech. “For me, the Sonnenwagen team are exemplary for creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. The students proved an impressive motivation and know-how to develop and optimize new ideas for solar-powered, light-weight electric vehicles.”

Multidisciplinary team

As many as nine disciplines of the Aachen-based team were involved in the design: the chassis, aerodynamics, structure, electrical engineering, driving strategy, production, sponsorship, marketing and logistics departments. “Close and efficient cooperation between these areas is very important, because we want to compete in the Challenger class at the race, where the main focus is on performance and maximum energy efficiency,” explains Lina Schwering, 1st Chairwoman of Team Sonnenwagen. “A lot of working time has gone into the Adelie, which we have invested alongside our studies and during our free time, and a lot of commitment and heart and soul.”

In total, more than 50 teams from 24 countries are setting out on the more than 3,000-kilometer route from Darwin to Adelaide – right across the Australian outback. There, people and models are exposed to very harsh climatic conditions with high temperatures and strong UV exposure from the sun during the race, but also during the preceding test drives. In addition, the vehicle is subjected to strong mechanical stresses that can affect the efficiency and performance of the battery.

Innovative materials

“The Sonnenwagen team therefore needed a lot of support in selecting the materials,” says Andreas Brandt, Head of Group Marketing and project sponsor at Covestro. “The new Sonnenwagen incorporates innovative products with different functionalities from various business segments, which are tested under track conditions.”

For example, the aerodynamic outer shell was made from milled SikaBlock polyurethane foam blocks from Sika, a long-standing partner of Covestro and another sponsor of Team Sonnenwagen. The Leverkusen-based company provided raw materials for this and advised the team on the implementation. The Sikaflex sealants for the solar cells are also based on components from Covestro. Other examples include a plastic sheet made of polycarbonate for the battery enclosure and thermoplastic cushioning materials for the driver’s seat trim.

“Pushing boundaries is what we at Covestro have in common with the young talents of Team Sonnenwagen,” says Sucheta Govil, summarizing her message. “We push the boundaries of innovation in materials, driven by our commitment to sustainable mobility of the future. With our products and solutions, we materialize the circular economy.”

Wire Mexico: New Satellite Exhibition in the Industrial Sector of the Global Wire and Cable Industry

Mexico is becoming increasingly important and is a key growth market for the wire and cable industry. Demand for these products is increasing, particularly strong from the Mexican automotive, electronics and energy industries. Where investment, planning and new construction is taking place, key technologies such as cables and wires are needed. This demand forms the decisive reason for Messe Düsseldorf to enter the Mexican market in 2024, initially as a special pavilion of wire Mexico as part of the established Mexican trade fair Expo Manufactura.

This will be held from January 30 to February 01, 2024, at the CINTERMEX Centro Internacional de Negocios, Monterrey. The city is in the northeast of Mexico and is the capital of the Mexican state of Nuevo León.

The International Trade Fair for Manufacturing Technology, Automation and Robotics – Expo Manufactura – has been held annually in Mexico since 1996. It is organized by the international organizer Tarsus Mexico. It is Mexico’s leading trade show for multiple manufacturing industries.

The last Expo Manufactura in February 2023 attracted 330 exhibitors, who presented more than 600 brands over three days of the fair. More than 15,500 visitors from 26 countries traveled to Mexico, primarily machinery manufacturers, suppliers, metal fabricators and experts from the electrical and automotive industries.

With a population of over 130 million citizens, large oil and gas reserves, and rich mineral resources such as gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper, Mexico is an interesting environment for European and German investors in particular, and is regarded as the extended workbench of the USA.

Economic policy agreements such as the EU-Mexico Agreement have also facilitated trade with Mexico for several years. This enables duty-free trade in goods between the EU and Mexico.

“Mexico is a growing international location that holds enormous growth potential, especially for the wire and cable industries,” says a delighted Daniel Ryfisch, Director of Messe Düsseldorf’s largest portfolio, wire, Tube & Flow Technologies.

Paul St. Amour, VP of Latin America for Tarsus Group says that “ we are delighted to add another industry sector to Expo Manufactura so that it will continue to be the most important manufacturing trade show in Northern Mexico. The wire pavilion with Messe Dusseldorf´s vast experience are a perfect for Expo Manufactura.”

ULTRA-LIGHT & SUSTAINABLE GRP COVER SHEETS

ULTRA-LIGHT & SUSTAINABLE GRP COVER SHEETS

The fuel costs are rising. The pollutants harm the environment. Our resources are running out. The economic growth is increasing continuously. Is there a solution to this dichotomy? Is it possible to reduce the weight of a vehicle and thus reduce consumption? Can the environment be protected through lower CO2 emissions and the use of recycled waste? OPTIPLAN has found an answer to these new market demands that can revolutionize the commercial vehicle and recreational vehicle sector: r-PET! The r-PET product line represents the new generation of sustainable GRP products. In cooperation with business partners, OPTIPLAN has developed a GRP product based on a PET recycled resin, which is in no way inferior to the technical properties of conventional GRP materials. The resin consists largely of recycled polyester obtained from post-consumer PET waste. For every vehicle produced, dozens of PET bottles can be “upcycled” for a second life as sidewalls, roof or floors (sandwich panels) in commercial vehicles and recreational vehicles.

This innovative material makes everything easier. It can be used in 3.5-ton trucks up to heavy trucks/semitrailers, all inner-city delivery vehicles, recreational vehicles & caravans, electric vehicles and even cargo bikes. The calculation is quite simple: Manufacturers who aim to protect the environment strive for a lower vehicle weight and at the same time a higher payload. As a result, fuel consumption and pollutant emissions (CO2) are reduced. The high-tech composite enables key objectives of modern, energy-efficient logistics to be achieved. OPTIPLAN has been inspired by these new challenges and has developed POLYDET® r-PET, an extremely lightweight, stable, durable and at the same time aesthetic material. The surface is coated with a gelcoat that protects against UV radiation. In addition, end customers can implement all colour requests that correspond to their specific corporate design and appearance in RAL, NCS and individual colour shades.

The great advantage: Since the coloration is already applied during the production process and is directly incorporated into the material, subsequent painting is unnecessary. Moreover, the paint is permanently resistant: It cannot be chipped by impact or corrosion. What is the advantage of GRP over aluminium? OPTIPLAN Sales Manager Timo Hoffmann: “GRP is known to be frequently used as a lighter alternative to aluminium. It has low thermal conductivity, as well as higher hail and corrosion resistance. With our HighGloss surface finish, we also enable a near-aluminium appearance. POLYDET® r-PET is not only lighter, but also easier to process.”

R-PET PowerStar and R-PET HighGloss

PowerStar is characterized by its robustness, wear resistance and lightness
PowerStar is extremely robust – heavy mechanical loading is no problem for this material. The laminated special fabric increases the glass content, which gives high impact resistance and increases durability. Due to the additional fabric stability, PowerStar also allows the lowest thicknesses starting from 0.7 mm, which makes it possible to produce ultra-light and resource-saving cover layers.

HighGloss shines with a glossy and visually attractive appearance
HighGloss is produced in a discontinuous cold curing process, which makes the surface quality of the gelcoat extremely weather, UV and colour resistant. Long life of the superstructure without yellowing and easy maintenance of the material (cleaning, polishing, touching up) are thus guaranteed.

OPTIPLAN launches the “Revolution of Lightweight Design” with these two materials. The versatility of these high-performance GRP cover layers means they can be used in almost any application: Commercial vehicles, recreational vehicles, boats, construction industry (interior fittings / facades),container and system construction.
