All businesses strive for success but what happens when the ability to manage increased demand is constrained by existing infrastructure that can’t keep up?

That is the challenge a global household name recently faced.

The card and gift retailer was struggling to process and distribute hundreds of thousands of orders per month placed at its hundreds of branded retail stores, tens of thousands of third party retail vendors, direct-from-consumer online orders, and a handful of subsidiaries.

Its output needs quickly became immense, varied, and complex.

Every shipment involved numerous pieces of printed material including shipping labels, packing slips, and box content, produced on multiple printing systems.

While these varied print needs may not be unusual, at this scale, any demands placed on suitable replacement solutions were significant.

Additionally, every single item printed for shipping needed to be automatically archived into a customer portal and be available to customer service teams.

The global retailer wanted to bring together a complex network of disparate systems, handle both print output and output management, and a single solution to serve as a system of record for distribution, among other functions.

It also identified a gap between the distribution and warehouse management systems.

It had already invested significantly in robotics and automation for picking and packing and a warehouse management system offering complete automation for some products and lines.

However, it lacked knowledge of the print side of distribution. In short, the company needed to:

  • Cut through this complexity.
  • Eliminate process steps.
  • A single solution to serve as a system of record.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to various formats and workflows.
  • Bridge the gap between distribution and warehouse management systems.

It needed an enterprise software solution that would easily integrate into the brand’s existing systems to manage the complex requirements in one central platform. This included automated picking lines, shipping labels, packing slips and plan-o-grams (for retail store shipments).

It now serves as the one system of record for all print related output and easily automates several customer service activities, including the archiving of all shipping labels and box content, routing that information directly into the company’s customer portal.

For all pick orders ProcessDirector bridges the gap between automated machine handling and those products and orders that must be handpicked. Now all label files are automatically converted to PDF for output.

The company is also able to centralise all print operations, not just for outputs at their core operations, but also for distributed operations (such as for acquired brands operating in separate physical locations). It can also enjoy more precise document management where every store in the business can access past print jobs and essential documents and print or customise them as needed.

Pulcra Chemicals Together With Inditex Develop Sustineri Coloring, an Innovative Dyeing Process of Cotton & Polyester/Cotton That Reduces Water Consumption by Up to 80%

Pulcra Chemicals and Inditex develop Sustineri Coloring, a combined pretreatment and dyeing process for cotton and polyester/cotton resulting in water, time and energy savings. This process is the result of a joint research between Pulcra Chemicals and Inditex with the goal to mitigate the impact of standard dyeing processes and to reduce the use of natural resources.

Sustineri Coloring is based on newly engineered process chemicals which allow a one bath pretreatment and dyeing process for dark, medium and light shades of cotton and polyester/cotton fabrics by exhaust method. This results in shorter processing time and less use of water and energy.

The process is already used by selected mills and it showed that Sustineri Coloring is reducing in pretreatment and dyeing the processing time by up to 60 % and the water and energy consumption by up to 80 and 60% respectively. The state-of-the-art products allow a one bath treatment which is the key in saving resources.

ELIX Polymers Receive Approval from Premium Automotive OEM for Anti-Squeak Materials

  • New grades reduce undesirable noises
  • New possibilities have been offered to significantly cut down costs

ELIX Polymers has developed a range of speciality grades of ABS and PC/ABS to reduce the squeaking and rattling sounds that are generated by plastic parts making contact with other plastic parts, leather, PVC-foil or other products. These undesirable noises can negatively affect the driver’s comfort as well as their perception of the quality of a car. Especially with the increase in popularity of electric and hybrid vehicles whose powertrains make less noise, anti-squeak materials are more often required by Automotive OEMs to produce critical interior parts like door handles, armrests, seating parts, sunroofs, cupholders and air vents. Several ELIX products have received approvals from a German premium Automotive OEM and will be used in future cars.

The materials were subjected to stick-slip tests according to VDA230-206 at testing machines from Ziegler Instruments with very positive test results: a 10-point scale was used, where 10 is the highest risk level. The newly developed ELIX grades managed to score 1 – the lowest risk level. Tests were conducted with different forces (10°N, 40°N) and speeds (1°mm/s and 4°mm/s) at several temperatures. Especially relevant successful results were obtained after the heat aging of materials where the risk normally increases in standard non-modified materials.

The new grades use ELIX Polymers’ base polymers: standard ABS, high heat ABS, ABS/PC or PC/ABS – and because their key properties remain the same, this does not affect existing OEM approvals of ELIX grades. Furthermore, as the shrinkage of the materials remains the same, current moulds can be used without further need for modifications. Significant cost savings are possible using these products, as no felts, tapes or grease need to be added after the injection and assembly of parts to reduce squeaking and rattling sounds. This new development is the result of ELIX Polymers close partnership with leading Automotive OEMs and its strategy directed at focusing on specialised added-value materials and the development of tailor-made solutions.

Product Overview

The Electrohydrostatic Pump System (EPS) consists of an Electrohydrostatic Pump Unit (EPU) and a standardized manifold with hydraulic accumulator. It is offered as a complete system without an actuator and can be easily integrated into machine concepts, whether retrofit or new developments.

BIOVYN PVC Supports Net-Zero-Energy Constructions(*) in the Netherlands

  • Several construction and renovation projects set for completion later this year in the Netherlands use window frames based on BIOVYN, bio-attributed PVC.

Bio-attributed PVC is making its way in the construction sector. This year, window profile producer Kömmerling will use INEOS Inovyn’s BIOVYN – the world’s first commercial PVC made of renewable feedstock – in renovation and new construction projects across the Netherlands.

The first installations are expected in June 2023. The first project will renovate 19 houses to turn them into net-zero-energy social housings. It will be the first construction project in the world to use certified bio-attributed PVC window frames.
