SACMI Offers the Brazilian Mineral Water Market a Bright ‘Turnkey’ Future

SACMI Offers the Brazilian Mineral Water Market a Bright ‘Turnkey’ Future

At the Congress Brasileiro de Industria de Águas Minerais (Rio de Janeiro, 12-15 September) SACMI will illustrate a solution that integrates cap and preform production and accelerates the transition to the 26/22 mm solution

SACMI has a tailor-made solution for Brazilian companies that bottle mineral water: production of cap and relative preform together, using the new lightweight SACMI necks to save energy and raw materials, all with the same outstanding performance.

The market

No matter what their size, structure or market, many companies share the same need: to take technology and quality to the next level and sharpen their competitiveness.

This is very much the case on the Brazilian market and SACMI addresses those needs by applying unique expertise in the form of cutting-edge technologies for each stage of production and an in-depth knowledge of materials.

The proposed technology

This is a far-reaching transition designed to take the industry towards the new 26/22 mm cap and neck. In practice, manufacturers can produce ultra-light caps (1 gram, and even 0.8 g with the 25/22 version) together with a preform weighing 9 grams, ready for use.

SACMI CCM (Continuous Compression Molding) technology is the standard-setter on the global cap-making industry, the SACMI IPS 220 the ‘smart’ version of the preform press. Combined, they allow a transition with guaranteed results, freeing up resources and safeguarding the environment.

A sole partner

SACMI operates as a sole partner, covering every stage of the process. The entire machine range is available with dedicated vision systems to ensure total quality control.

SACMI do Brasil doesn’t just provide technical assistance throughout the implementation and testing phases: it also does so right from the product conception and development stage, with customized solutions certified by the major global brand owners.

New standards… and much more

As it seeks to respond to the global trend towards new, improved production standards, SACMI works alongside international certification bodies such as CETIE.

Yet the opportunities don’t end there. If we consider today’s most widespread standard – the PCO 1881 – SACMI offers lightened neck versions for still and sparkling water that maintain the same performance. Close customer support ensures producers make the investment that best meets their business goals.

In any case, what makes the difference is the supply of turnkey plant engineering solutions: with SACMI, customers don’t just buy a machine, they buy intelligence, know-how, and assistance throughout the entire plant lifespan.

Seven-Up Bottling Co. Ltd (Nigeria): Four Sacmi Lines Already Operational, With a Fifth on the Way

Seven-Up Bottling Co. Ltd (Nigeria): Four Sacmi Lines Already Operational, With a Fifth on the Way

COMBO Blo2Fill plays pivotal role in water and CSD bottling operations. The company has also taken delivery of the first CCMs, strengthening an already solid partnership on the crown cap front. Mr. Ziad Maalouf (Managing Director): “We’ve gone for the best available technology on the market so we can push ahead with our mission of producing high quality drinks on behalf of the major global brand owners”

Seven-Up Bottling Co. Ltd was founded in Nigeria in 1960, on the same day the country gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Ever since that first bottle of 7Up, the company has grown steadily by remaining faithful to its mission of using the best available technology to package high quality beverages on behalf of the world’s most renowned brand owners.

What’s more, it also enjoys a rewarding partnership with the SACMI Group, which has been supplying the company with crown cap manufacturing machines for over 20 years (the latest, delivered in 2022, has an ultra-high output capacity of 5,000 caps per minute). That partnership now continues with the recent decision to invest in further development and modernization of the bottling lines, with SACMI-developed technology playing a huge role in 4 of the country’s 9 plants (i.e. Ikeja, Aba, Abuja, Enugu and, most recently, Kano). Note that further investments are already in the pipeline.

Mr. Ziad Maalouf (Managing Director) gives us an analysis of the present scenario and future prospects.

Mr. Ziad, which brands does Seven-Up Bottling work for?

“The Seven-Up Bottling Company Ltd is one of Nigeria’s largest manufacturing concerns. Our nine factories produce and distribute some of the best known, best loved beverage brands. These include Pepsi, 7Up, Mirinda, Teem, Mountain Dew, H2oH!, Lipton Ice Tea and Aquafina premium mineral water”.

How did the partnership with SACMI develop, and what technologies were involved?

“Ensuring our customers get nothing but the best is our number one priority. That’s why we’ve drawn up an ambitious technological/plant modernization plan for all our production facilities. The SACMI range has proved to be a winner as it covers all the various needs of a modern bottling plant. In 2022 we successfully installed and started up four water and CSD lines at the Ikeja, Aba, Abuja and Enugu plants, while a fifth ‘hybrid’ line is expected to become operational at the Kano site by the end of 2023”.

Let’s talk about stretch-blow molding and filling. Why did you invest in the SACMI Blo2Fill ‘COMBO’?

“We selected this solution after careful assessment of the alternatives. The primary advantage of Blo2Fill is that it offers a unique response to the multiple needs of a modern bottling factory. Another decisive factor was the extremely high productivity provided by the ‘dual cavity’ option on this solution, both on large sizes of up to 2 liters and on medium-small formats such as 500 ml. In other words, we needed outstanding versatility. However, we also wanted the reliability of a sole partner and a single platform, capable of responding to our diversified needs”.

Tell us about the order in more detail.

“Three of the new, already-operational lines are dedicated to the stretch-blow molding, filling and capping of carbonated soft drinks (CSD). Here, the solutions include the SACMI ESF 12/120/20 filler, which delivers output rates of up to 48,000 bottles per hour in the standard 300 and 500 ml formats. The fourth water line, instead, features the AWS 12/60/20 filler. This produces up to 52,000 bottles per hour with small formats (500 ml), 45,000 with medium-sized 750 ml products and 24,000 with the classic 1.5 liter PET water bottles. Last but not least comes the fifth line being supplied to Kano, a so-called ‘swing’, or hybrid, line for bottling both water and CSDs”.

What further advantages have you gained from an integrated plant engineering perspective?

“In this case we need to mention the new SACMI labelers, the market-leading OPERA 400 RF machines. These extremely fast machines are designed to apply up to 60,000 cylindrical labels per hour and feature an advanced handling system that enables the labeler to keep pace with the speed of the bottling line, regardless of the size being produced. In practice, we’re talking about extremely powerful labeling machines that are well suited not just to our high line speeds but also, more generally, to the total automation of the entire plant that this sort of configuration requires”.

Tell us about the cap lines.

“In glass bottling, we’ve enjoyed a decades-long partnership with SACMI, which has supplied us with its world-beating crown cap manufacturing machines. The last such order, delivered in 2022, was for a high-speed line producing 5,000 caps per minute. With this latest investment plan, our partnership with SACMI will now be extended to include the supply of two CCM plastic cap-making machines. Once again, we were attracted by their internationally recognized technological leadership and the advantages the machines offer in terms of speed, quality and low consumption”.

Latamcan 2023: Sacmi Presents the Revolutionary Classy Ai, Now for Metal Packaging Too

Latamcan 2023: Sacmi Presents the Revolutionary Classy Ai, Now for Metal Packaging Too

SACMI to give a presentation on its “Next Generation AI-based vision system for the can-making industry”, illustrating a revolutionary vision system management tool that uses artificial intelligence algorithms. The results: simplified control of systems, higher quality and speed, more effective process feedback

LatamCan 2023 offers the perfect showcase for Classy AI, the advanced ‘Made in SACMI’ interface that uses AI to revolutionize vision system control. A key event for the Americas – from Latin America to the United States – but also for Europe, this year’s international conference will be held in Mexico City (12-14 July 2023, Hilton Hotel).

SACMI will give a talk on its “Next Generation AI-based vision system for the can-making industry” (3PC area, 13 July at 9.30). The goal: to present SACMI Classy AI, a valuable artificial vision tool that, following its launch in the plastics sector (vision systems for caps and preforms), is now available for the vast metal packaging world, making it a true all-rounder.

What is Classy AI for? Remember, this isn’t a new type of control – SACMI provides a comprehensive range of vision systems for all your metal packaging inspection needs – but a revolution in the approach to how inspection is managed. With Classy AI, the operator isn’t faced with a complex technical interface (although that’s always there if needed) but a user-friendly dashboard which, if a defect occurs, classifies it ‘by family’ (accidental, technological, decoration-OCR, measures, specific) and above all, specifies its origin.

In addition to identifying the type of defect and showing the affected part of the object, the dashboard creates quality statistics, letting users build up an analysis database and identify drifts immediately. The result: immediate, valuable data for the line operator, who can use process feedback to perform preventive, targeted maintenance and corrections.

Why Classy AI? The main advantage of the system lies in being able to recognize not just individual defects but their origins in relation to the various detectable defect ‘families’. Above all, this is a revolution that focuses on the operators: they don’t necessarily have to be vision system experts and can manage the line optimally, filtering alarms unequivocally and requesting the intervention of an expert technician only if necessary. To illustrate more clearly, just think of the changes taking place in the car industry, where advanced sensors and digital dashboards offer increasingly detailed, sophisticated vehicle info… and you’ don’t need to be a mechanic to understand it!

Metal Pigments Create Mirror Effect: Altana Innovation Award Honors Pioneering Technology

Metal Pigments Create Mirror Effect: Altana Innovation Award Honors Pioneering Technology

  • New potential for automotive suppliers, the printing industry, and manufacturers of consumer electronics and household appliances
  • Interdisciplinary team develops effect pigments with almost real chrome look
  • Carbon footprint reduced by more than ten percent compared to existing products

Every year, the ALTANA Innovation Award honors the global specialty chemicals group’s most promising new developments. This year, a team from ALTANA’s ECKART division came out on top. The award went to the new METALURE C series developed in the U.S. and Germany.

Chrome or a chrome look? In the future, it will become more difficult to tell the difference because ECKART’s award-winning product series creates novel chrome looks and offers a choice of light and dark silver metallic shades. The effect pigments create a veritable mirror effect. Plus, the light-dark shades of the surfaces are comparable to those of products that have been coated with a metallic layer and thus serve as a substitute for metallization processes containing chrome VI.

The METALURE C series relies on a concentration of ultra-thin vacuum-metallized pigments (VMP). The advantage for customers: The products are easy to process and can therefore be used in different printing and coating systems. In addition, the newly developed products improve the ecological balance. Compared to products already available on the market, the carbon footprint is slashed by over ten percent.

The pigments are used in particular in coatings for consumer electronics, household appliances, and for the interior and exterior trim of vehicles. They are also used in the printing industry.

“The innovative effect pigments are a trendsetting development, as they set new standards in terms of sustainability and quality. The fact that the development centered on customer benefits is clearly reflected by the mounting demand in the market. The interdisciplinary winning team has impressively demonstrated what distinguishes ALTANA – innovative strength and customer focus,” says Dr. Petra Severit, ALTANA’S Chief Technology Officer.

The Innovation Award, with which ALTANA recognizes outstanding research achievements on the part of its employees, was presented this year for the eleventh time. In addition to innovative prowess, criteria such as creativity, economic efficiency, and sustainability are also taken into account in the assessment.

Packaging Specialist ALPLA Launches New ALPLArecycling Brand

Packaging Specialist ALPLA Launches New ALPLArecycling Brand

Investment in the circular economy – production capacity doubled since 2021

The globally active ALPLA Group has been investing in building up its own recycling capacities since 2005. The plastic packaging company now operates 13 plants, including four joint ventures with regional partners, and aims to be processing at least 25 per cent post-consumer material (PCR) by 2025. After investing millions in new sites in South Africa, Romania and Thailand as well as in a site expansion in Poland, ALPLA is now consolidating all of its activities under the new brand ALPLArecycling.

Dietmar Marin, Managing Director Recycling Division at ALPLA.

ALPLA is focusing on mechanical recycling and has invested more than 50 million euros a year in the global expansion of its activities since 2021. Thanks to new plants, the expansion of existing facilities, joint ventures and strategic acquisitions, the annual installed and projected output capacity has since doubled to 350,000 tonnes of PCR material. Together with the construction of a new facility in South Africa as recently announced and the site expansion in Poland, the annual capacity amounts to 266,000 tonnes of rPET (recycled PET) and 84,000 tonnes of rHDPE (recycled HDPE).

Around 1.100 ALPLA employees work on recycling. In addition to the production of high-quality rPET and rHDPE at 13 plants, including four joint ventures with regional partners, the company focuses on the development of sustainable packaging solutions with a high proportion of recycled materials, optimum recyclability and low weight. The growing importance of the recycling sector, strong expansion and increasing demand have now led to the establishment of the ALPLArecycling brand together with its own website. There, you will find comprehensive information about recycling at ALPLA, the products available and the locations of the recycling plants and joint ventures at a glance.

‘Every year, we are producing more high-quality, affordable and sustainable packaging from used packaging. With our own production, development and material optimisation, we ensure quality and quantity, while also strengthening regional and national recycling loops,’ emphasises ALPLA CEO Philipp Lehner. Recycling plastics reduces carbon consumption by up to 90 per cent, reduces waste and creates value and jobs at the sites.

‘Our many years of expertise and access to our own materials give our customers a competitive advantage. The new brand is a clear commitment to recycling and to our expansion plans in growth markets,’ explains Dietmar Marin, Managing Director of the Recycling division at ALPLA. In the coming years, the company will intensify its activities in areas such as southern Africa, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. ‘Interest in sustainable packaging is growing all over the world. We are present as pioneers in all the regions of the world and are already a strong partner for future solutions,’ says Marin.

Packaging and recycling specialist ALPLA processes used PET bottles as well as used HDPE packaging.

Recycling target: 25 per cent PCR material by 2025
ALPLA currently processes 20 per cent PCR material and aims to increase this to at least 25 per cent by 2025. In addition, all packaging solutions are to be fully recyclable by then. The company has been part of the New Plastics Economy, an initiative of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, since 2018. ‘We firmly believe in plastic as a recyclable material and in the success of closed bottle-to-bottle loops. With our commitment, we want to create infrastructure in as many countries as possible, raise awareness and thus generate added value for the environment, economy and society,’ says Günther Lehner, Chairman of the Company Advisory Board.
