Arburg Senior Partner Eugen Hehl Passed Away

Arburg Senior Partner Eugen Hehl Passed Away

  • Arburg: Dynamic corporate development significantly shaped.
  • Plastics industry: Globally outstanding entrepreneurial personality.
  • Region: Socially committed, Christian values, characterised by sustainability.

On 12 December 2023, Eugen Hehl, Senior Partner of Arburg GmbH + Co KG, passed away at the age of 94. In addition to his entrepreneurial vision, the trained master mechanic was recognised above all for his services to the development of global sales at Arburg and the company’s construction infrastructure, as well as his strong social commitment to and in the region. The family-owned company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of plastic processing machines.

As Chairman of the Management Team for many years and responsible for global sales at Arburg, Eugen Hehl played a key role in the company’s global success. Technically trained, but with a keen instinct for sales in particular, he played a decisive role in shaping the family business for more than seven decades in congenial co-operation with his brother Karl, who passed away in 2010. With his ideas and solutions regarding construction, he gave the company an unmistakable profile worldwide. As Managing Partner, Eugen Hehl played a key role in the global success of the family company as the “master builder of the company”.

Global sales structures established

In 1951, Eugen Hehl began to build up his own, initially regional, sales structures by travelling extensively. As early as 1957, he raised the company’s sales to an international level by participating in the first trade fair in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Eugen Hehl pursued committed visions throughout his life. As early as 1962, he travelled to Japan and the USA to further boost machine sales.

With a love of detail and determination, the ambitious hunter, morning fitness enthusiast and tea drinker also implemented the construction activities at the main plant and the successively established Arburg subsidiaries around the world from the very beginning. With foresight, he had buildings in Lossburg that were between two and four years old partially demolished in 1966 in order to enable what is known as grid construction and thus improved future expansion alternatives on the company premises. Many of the Arburg subsidiaries around the world resemble the headquarters in terms of their exterior design and are therefore clearly recognisable.

Strong social commitment

At Arburg, in his home town Lossburg and far beyond the region, Eugen Hehl was held in high esteem both personally and professionally. Together with his brother Karl, Eugen Hehl was also known for his strong social commitment. The two of them had the Gebrüder Hehl Foundation established in Lossburg, which officially began its work in 1999. The retirement home operated by “Bruderhaus-Diakonie,” a non-profit, Christian diaconal foundation in Baden-Württemberg, is open to older people for assisted living, short-term and elderly care. Eugen Hehl was also active in the church, including in the church choir of the Lossburg parish.

Outstanding achievements

In November 2000, the Federal Republic of Germany honoured Eugen Hehl with the Federal Cross of Merit for his achievements. The company also received the Baden-Württemberg Business Medal in 1990 and the Baden-Württemberg Competence Award for Innovation and Quality in 2015. Further awards include honorary citizenship of the municipality of Lossburg in November 1997 and the Golden Master Craftsman’s Certificate in 2005. The American Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) presented Eugen and Karl Hehl with the Business Management Award in 2007 for their joint life’s work. Eugen Hehl was inducted into the “Plastics Hall of Fame” in 2015 for his life’s work. In 2020, the senior partner received the Richard Vieweg Medal of Honour, the highest award of the Association of German Engineers (VDI).

In Eugen Hehl, Arburg and the entire industry have lost a down-to-earth and success-orientated person, entrepreneur and pioneer. The Managing Partners, in particular his two children Juliane and Michael Hehl, who together with their cousin Renate Keinath are currently managing the company in the third generation, the Managing Directors and all employees will remember him with honour and gratitude.

Arburg Event Especially For Host Computer Experts ALS User Meeting 2023: Digitalisation In Manufacturing Is Picking Up Speed

Arburg Event Especially For Host Computer Experts ALS User Meeting 2023: Digitalisation In Manufacturing Is Picking Up Speed

  • Event in Lossburg: Around 170 participants learn about digital injection moulding production at Arburg.
  • Two days – one topic: Digitalisation and applications of the ALS host computer system.
  • Network: Arburg experts and ALS users exchange experiences.

On 22 and 23 November 2023, Arburg hosted its renowned event dedicated to the Arburg host computer system ALS, extending over two days for the first time. A total of around 170 participants came to Lossburg. The “Digitalisation Info Day” was aimed specifically at anyone interested in entering the world of digital injection moulding production. On the second day, the ALS experts shared the experiences they had using the host computer system in their production processes and applications. In addition to specialist presentations by Arburg, ALS customers and partners, there was ample opportunity to experience the wide range of digital products and services from Arburg and its partners first-hand and to find out more about the innovations, potential and added value of ALS. The participants also made good use of the opportunity to network.

“We are delighted that you have come to Lossburg, even though the focus is specifically on software and not, as usual, on machines and robotic systems, i.e. hardware,” said Andreas Reich, Arburg Vice President Central Sales & Applied Technologies, welcoming the guests. “Alongside the shortage of skilled workers and energy costs, our customers are currently focussing on digitalisation and automation in production. We offer extensive expertise and important leverage in all four areas, as recently demonstrated with arburgSOLUTIONworl’ at Fakuma 2023.”

Exciting digitalisation info day

Stephan Reich, Vice President Global IT & Digital Services, gave an overview of the digital products and services of the arburgXworld programme and emphasised: “Our digital product portfolio is an essential part of arburgSOLUTIONworld. This clearly demonstrates that Arburg is a competent solution provider far beyond injection moulding machines and automation.” In addition to the ALS host computer system for “Smart Production” (on premise), the digital arburgXworld includes, for example, the arburgXworld customer portal for “Smart Services” (on cloud) that can be networked with it as well as the Gestica control system and connectivity for the “Smart Machine” (on edge).

Andreas Reich, Arburg-Bereichsleiter Zentralvertrieb & Anwendungstechnik, begrüßte die rund 170 Teilnehmer zum Info-Tag Digitalisierung und ALS-Anwendertreffens 2023.

For potential new users of digitalisation, Markus Widmaier from the Digital Industrial Solutions Support team explained in a very descriptive way what specific benefits and added value workers, planners and managers can generate with the help of ALS, for example in terms of reproducible product quality, simplified production planning and greater transparency. The Arburg ALS team also presented the new features of the host computer and customer portal.

Some selected ALS customers spoke about the customer benefits that can be obtained through digital manufacturing. One highlight was the keynote speech by Nissrin Perez from Fraunhofer IOSB-INA with her extensive expertise in the field of “Smart E-Factory”. Presentations by partners and live demonstrations rounded off the programme before some of ALS key-account customers joined for dinner and networking in the evening.

ALS user meeting with lively discussions

The next day also revolved around how digitalisation can be used to tap into new potential and further increase production and energy efficiency. The ALS experts delved deeper into the topic of the host computer system. Speakers from renowned companies such as Behringer, Fischer and Röchling reported on how they use ALS specifically for validation processes and traceability, for example, how they also integrate external machines and peripherals into the central tool, increase OEE key figures by up to 30 per cent, network their production sites worldwide and create transparency with a mobile dashboard. This was followed by many discussions and a lively exchange. “We received tremendously positive feedback from the participants.

Everyone felt that they were in good hands with us and were able to obtain personalised information and advice beyond the presentations,” summarised Peter Kowalewski, Head of IT Digital Industrial Solutions, who moderated the entire event. “We also took away valuable suggestions and ideas and will use these as a basis to expand and further develop our host computer system with the customer in mind.”

33,130 Euros For The Courage Foundation For Chronically Ill Children Dieffenbacher Collected Donations During Its 150th-Anniversary Celebrations

33,130 Euros For The Courage Foundation For Chronically Ill Children Dieffenbacher Collected Donations During Its 150th-Anniversary Celebrations

DIEFFENBACHER welcomed numerous business partners to a festive stakeholder event in its specially prepared assembly hall to celebrate its 150th anniversary. In the run-up to the celebrations, DIEFFENBACHER requested that guests refrain from bringing gifts but instead donate to a good cause.

The response was tremendous, raising 33,130 euros, which DIEFFENBACHER CEO Christian Dieffenbacher handed over to Petra Köllner-Kleinemeier and Saskia Walker from the COURAGE Foundation for chronically ill children at the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital.

“The COURAGE Foundation is a cause close to our hearts and one that we’ve supported for many years,” says Christian Dieffenbacher. “After we sent out the invitations for our anniversary event in the summer, we were often asked about the topic of birthday presents. However, being able to celebrate our anniversary with all our guests was gift enough for us, so we came up with the idea of launching a fundraising appeal for COURAGE,” he states.

The COURAGE Foundation aims to give chronically ill children and adolescents more quality and enjoyment of life beyond medical treatment during their hospital stay. It reinforces their courage, strength, confidence and support in fighting their disease.

The donations collected by DIEFFENBACHER will help fund an annual two-week vacation camp in the Black Forest for dialysis patients and children and adolescents with kidney and liver transplants. Additionally, the COURAGE Foundation supports several other projects, including “Fit for School,” which aims to enable children to start school with friends of the same age without delays or learning deficits, and the children’s palliative care team in the Rhine-Neckar region.

“On behalf of the foundation, I would like to thank DIEFFENBACHER for the donation initiative,” said Petra Köllner-Kleinemeier, Chairwoman of the COURAGE Foundation, during the check presentation on December 7, 2023 at the company’s headquarters in Eppingen, Germany. “I will pass on these thanks to our anniversary guests straight away,” added Dieffenbacher. “We didn’t expect to raise such a large sum of money. Once again, many thanks to all the donors.”

XSYS Launches Versatile Nyloprint WS PRO D Letterpress Plate For Brilliant Print Results in Tube, Cup and Can Applications

XSYS Launches Versatile Nyloprint WS PRO D Letterpress Plate for Brilliant Print Results in Tube, Cup and can Applications

  •  Offers exceptional print quality with superior highlight dots
  •  Shorter processing times due to higher sensitivity to LED exposure
  • Longer durability on press as new formulation is less prone to cracking
  • Suitable for all types of letterpress plate processing equipment

XSYS has announced the launch of nyloprint WS PRO Digital, a newly developed water-washable, steel-based letterpress plate ideal for the printing of plastic tubes and cups, and metal cans and aerosols. Optimized for LED inline exposure and brush washout, the
new plate provides superior printing quality independent of the processing equipment. It also excels due to the high stability of the steel used with the nyloprint materials, which is less prone to kinks and irreversible bending, and its exceptional durability even in the longest print runs at high speed.

“Our customers are under constant pressure to deliver consistent print results quicker, cheaper, and more efficiently, so they need us to continue innovating in this field to give them a competitive edge,” said Dr. Christian Pietsch, Product Manager & Global KAM nyloprint at XSYS. “The new nyloprint WS PRO Digital represents a significant addition to our existing portfolio of letterpress printing plates, offering premium results in combination with LED exposure, due to its excellent durability and high stability.”

Available in four thicknesses, the nyloprint WS PRO D letterpress plate offers better Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and is suitable for dry offset, rotary letterpress, imprinting units and special-purpose printing presses. It exhibits higher sensitivity to UVA LED exposure compared to the market standard, meaning it can be processed faster on inline UV units. The new plate’s greater durability and long cleaning intervals further increase efficiencies on press. In combination with LED exposure, nyloprint WS PRO D delivers overall excellent print quality with especially superior highlights and finest image details. Customers will also experience the benefits of lower dot gain in print due to dot sharpening.

https://modernplasticsaward.com/nominate-now-2023-24/

Because the new formulation is less prone to plate deformation, other advantages include reduced plate waste and longer durability on press, which improve the sustainability of the production process. As well as being suitable for all types of processing equipment, including the XSYS nyloprint range, the new plate also works well with ThermoFlexX TFxX imagers that have been fitted with a Hybrid drum (with vacuum channels and magnets).

nyloprint WS PRO D presents a significant leap in productivity and efficiency, offering invaluable benefits to converters. This advancement empowers them to expedite product delivery without compromising on top-tier quality. Driven by its proven durability on the press, it not only reduces operational costs but also minimizes waste generation. This sustainability-conscious approach aligns
seamlessly with the objectives of brand owners," emphasized Dr. Christian Pietsch. “With this introduction, XSYS continues its mission to provide brilliance for customers with the latest innovation in plates and platemaking equipment that allows them to succeed.”

Cooperation With RWTH and FH Aachen: Racing Cars With Solar Drive

Cooperation With RWTH and FH Aachen: Racing Cars With Solar Drive

  • Covestro is main sponsor of Team Sonnenwagen for another two years
  • CTO Thorsten Dreier: “Reducing emissions together”
  • More sustainable material solutions for interiors, exteriors and powertrains

Protecting the climate is one of the greatest challenges of our time. One of the main sources of greenhouse gases in particular – transportation – is in urgent need of a climate-friendly transformation. At the Mobility Day North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) on December 18 in Essen, experts from politics, business and society spoke and discussed the current situation and possibilities for the rapid implementation of climate-neutral mobility in Germany’s most populous federal state.

Covestro is already making an important contribution to more sustainable vehicles and infrastructure with innovative material solutions. In this context, the company is also working in close partnership with Team Sonnenwagen, a team of around 50 students from RWTH Aachen University and Aachen University of Applied Sciences. It is dedicated to developing racing cars that are powered solely by the sun. Covestro shares the students’ enthusiasm because the racing cars, with their high efficiency and use of new technologies and materials, are a powerful symbol of the mobility of the future. That is why Covestro is supporting the team as the main sponsor with material solutions and technical exchange for another two years.

“In order to create a climate-neutral and circular mobility of the future, business, politics and society must pull together. At Covestro, we are contributing to this transformation by offering the automotive industry raw materials based on biomass or recyclates and manufacturing our products as energy-efficiently and with as few emissions as possible,” said Dr. Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer, during the discussion. “At Covestro, we want our production to be climate-neutral by 2035 and are relying on energy from renewable sources and innovative process technologies to achieve this.”

Covestro’s material developments focus on solutions for the major trends of electromobility, autonomous driving and the need for individualization. These include material solutions for compact, powerful and safe batteries for electric cars and robust charging systems, plastics for connected mobility and the Internet of Things, as well as various products for aesthetic and functional automotive interiors and exteriors.

Covestro has been supporting Team Sonnenwagen in the development of ever more efficient solar racing cars since 2017. The students are working together in a wide range of disciplines to improve the aerodynamics, optimize the chassis and install a particularly efficient photovoltaic system and battery. Participants at the NRW Mobility Day were able to take a look at the Covestro Photon, the predecessor model to the current Adelie racing car, and talk to team members. With the Photon, Team Sonnenwagen became European champion at the European solar race in Zolder, Belgium, in September 2022.

MRPC Gains Medaccred Accreditation – Demonstrating Commitment To Quality And Opening Doors To New Business

MRPC Gains Medaccred Accreditation –  Demonstrating Commitment To Quality And Opening Doors To New Business

MRPC, a full contract manufacturer of medical devices, instruments, and disposables is attracting new business opportunities less than 12 months after achieving MedAccred Accreditation.

The U.S.-based company is a turnkey manufacturing partner to some of the world’s largest medical device companies, and the accreditation is a clear indicator of the excellence of the company, and the quality of its critical manufacturing processes.

MRPC was looking for a proactive way to drive quality improvements and develop a competitive advantage and decided to explore MedAccred Accreditation further after an OEM reinforced its significance.

MedAccred is the supply chain oversight program that focusses on critical manufacturing processes in the medical device industry to improve device quality and enhance patient safety. Its audit criteria are set by its Subscribers, who are among the largest companies in the medical devices sector, including Baxter, Becton Dickinson, Boston Scientific, Edwards Lifesciences, Medtronic, Philips Healthcare, Roche Diagnostics and Stryker.

Carl Lider, Chief Operating Officer at MRPC, said: “Gaining the accreditation aligns with MRPC’s continuous goal of being a world class medical device manufacturer. This certification further demonstrates to our customers and perspective customers that we are dedicated to delivering on our promise of quality and service.”

MRPC was already partnering with the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) National Network, for a program called Medical Manufacturers MedAccred Accreditation Pathway (MedMMAP). The program allocates critical process experts to conduct on-site assessments and prepare manufacturers for a gap closure process.

Before the MedAccred Auditor visit, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership assessed the business’ current position and identified gaps that needed to be addressed. While various actions, such as documenting what people routinely do, were relatively simple, others took a few months, as a team designed, documented and socialized new methods across the company’s sites, while focusing initially on gaining accreditation at the Hudson, New Hampshire facility.

MRPC reports that these steps enabled the company to pass its MedAccred audit assessment smoothly. Although it’s early in the journey, the company expects year over year improvements with key metrics such as the Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ), and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

An already proven benefit is an uptick in business enquiries, said Mr Lider: He added: “MedAccred accreditation has enabled us to build relationships with some of the world’s leading medical device OEMs. We have seen significant interest and excitement.”

Bob Lizewski, VP MedAccred, said: “MRPC took a thorough, systematic approach to achieving MedAccred accreditation. We’re delighted they are already seeing the quality and business benefits and are now pursuing MedAccred accreditation for a further site.”

MRPC achieved MedAccred Accreditation for Plastics Injection Molding, Insert Molding, and Overmolding at their Hudson, New Hampshire facility. The company also has facilities located in Butler, Wisconsin (headquarters); and Largo, Florida. Core competencies include Design For Manufacturability, Silicone Molding, Plastic Molding and Extrusions, Multi-Material Molding, Finished Medical Device Assembly, and Global Supply Chain Development and Management. It was one of the first manufacturing companies in Wisconsin to gain ISO 13485 certification.

  • Arburg Managing Partner Michael Hehl: “We are most proud and would like to thank all of our employees!”

To achieve this, you have to have done a lot of things right! Once again, Black Forest injection moulding machine manufacturer Arburg from Lossburg is back on the list of German world market leaders. Every year, the University of St. Gallen lists the top 450 companies “Made in Germany” based on a number of strict criteria. Arburg has met all of them and outstandingly too!

Proud to be ranked among the 450 German global market leaders: Michael Hehl, Managing Partner and Spokesman for the Management Team.

The World Market Leader Index is compiled by the Swiss University of St. Gallen under the academic direction of Professor Christoph Müller. The co-operation partner is the Academy of German World Market Leaders, led by former Baden-Württemberg Minister of Economic Affairs Walter Döring.

It is based on a database with 1,300 entries of potential world market leaders. The best of the best are filtered for the list based on strict criteria.

The requirements that companies have to fulfil include being number one or two worldwide in terms of turnover in a relevant market segment.

With 875 million euros. Arburg is in an excellent position for 2022. In addition, at least 50 per cent of the annual turnover must be generated abroad and on three continents. Arburg achieves a 70 per cent export share on six continents.

Family tradition from the Black Forest

In addition, the owners must be based in Germany, at least in part. As the family business has been firmly rooted in Lossburg for exactly 100 years, this was not a major hurdle. Michael Hehl, Managing Partner and Spokesman for the Management Team: “We are naturally very pleased and proud that Arburg is once again on the list of 450 German world market leaders. It is also in the top third, among the best 150 companies. This demonstrates that, in our anniversary year too, we are still on the right track. Ultimately, of course, this fantastic result would not have been possible without our fantastic employees. I’d therefore like to say thank you very much to them for that!”

The complete list of the 450 companies is published in the current special issue no. 1 of “WirtschaftsWoche” from 6 November 2023: Title: ” Die 450 heimlichen Weltmarktführer”.
